    Bestest bodges

Right guy's time for some scary stories of bodged work that you've found on your car since buying it, or bodged work that's been done since you owned it.
I'm not after names of individuals or businesses, just a description of the Bodged work they've done.
Ball rolling, a couple on my RS2, rear diff mount had a jubilee clip inserted into where bush should of been to take up slack
Cable ties holding gear linkage together
Sure you guy's can come up with more horrors.
Go on, make my jaw drop.

Break pads hammered in, but not all the way, and pad retaining clip not fastened.

I did find a screwdriver behind the aux. gauges too...

Years ago, a friend bought a VW Scirocco which the seller had owned for a year or two. He claimed it had never had any body work done.

When we got it home, my friend opened the bonnet and lent on the front by the bonnet catch, which promptly caved in.

10 minutes later we had dug out an entire rolled up and painted local newspaper, which turned out to be..........

      .....2 weeks old

My mate nicked a hubcap to make a full set, put the painted newspaper back in (after a quick read) and sold the car the same week.

      Cheers n

Someone removed oil cooler off a s2 avant then used the original braided hoses and put a fitting between the ends that fit on the oil cooler that was not the worst one of the braided hoses was bent over and kinked and crimped and was starting to leak

had a mk1 golf that the drivers side windscreen surround had been remade with cardboard and filler...

worse one was a friends old engine, he owns a 306maxi and the old engine had a score in cylinder3 and low compression in 2 and 3, so as a temporary measure (bearing in mind he was having a race engine built to replace it) he poured some liquid metal into the two middle cylinders and then turned it over to coat the liners lol.

Ran it for 8weeks like that including driving to nurburgring, 5laps and then back home to cambridge again lol.

Had an 1100 that had had the lower ball joints replaced with mini ones, taper was 5mm too small diameter, front wheels had variable toe in / out of about + or - 5 degrees, in on the power out on the brakes. Scary drive

I'll put this one on "bestest bodge to get you home"

Customers Big block "68 Mustang, set off to work to do some brake repairs, got half way there and the engine started staulling when I need it to idle. Also big sucking noise from engine.
Stopped and had look under the hood, found servo vacuum pipe broken off at the servo, ie big amount of air leaking in. Just then a chap came out of his house to see the beast sat outside. "need anything?" borrowed a knife to cut off the hose with stuck in part of servo, now what can I bung the hole with?
Radio knob fitted perfect! no more staulling! slightly heavy brakes, so on I went. Look on the blokes face as fitted the knob......priceless!

Johns brake pad was the most dangerous bodge I have seen!

just spoke to a friend who said he had a bodge to get home in his 205gti a few months back....

Throttle cable snapped at pedal end. So he couldn't apply throttle to accelerate, solution was some spare wiring loom in the boot... tied to throttle and routed back to the bulkhead and to the steering wheel lol. He had his friend (passenger) pull on the wire to accelerate....

Can't beat 5 laps of the 'ring running on liquid metal i'm afraid....

Back on RS2s, my new car had just had the front CV joint and suspension "fixed" when I bought it. The guy had repacked the CV and then used a tyrap instead of the £2 clip so that when the joint was warm it squeezed grease out onto the brake caliper!

The suspension had 1 new bush (hammered in with a socket of course) despite the shock, top mounts and track rods all being shagged. He charged the owner £600 including "wheel alignment" - he must have been a very clever guy as the steering rod and track rod end were seized solid, wouldn't part even when glowing red and had to be replaced. Ty rap was no doubt from the same bag as the one found holding the throttle linkage together.

Since buying the car we have replaced and fixed numerous bodges, some by well respected "tuners". New fuel lines rubbing on the exhaust manifold for a start!!

                        Best bodges eh.........

Had a car come in with a towrope as all 3 engine and gearbox mounts- wondered why the bonnet was so heavy............

Copper grease in wheel bearings and cv joints..............

Transit front disc that had snapped off at the "bell" tacked back on (only 4 tacks though and he didn't have any welding gas on/none left)...........

Expanding foam to fix a puncture(worked quite well)..........

Tywraps holding an ldv propshaft up when the centre bearing collapsed.............

                        Chemical metal............

                        All french cars.............

Had a hose split on my Mk1 golf only thing that i had to plug the pipe was one of my brand new snap on screwdrivers that were still in the box- plugged the hole, carried on the journey ,ordered a new pipe, on back order , arrived a week later, when i removed the screwdriver the end had melted to the shape of the pipe and mr snap on man wouldnt give me a new one.........

Hmm, expanding foam seems to be popular.
This was a fix for a leaking bonnet release cable grommet where it goes through the bulkhead.
It "was" on my recently purchased chip pan stinker 80 TDi work hack.
I couldn't get into the fusebox, wonder why the previous owner thought he'd never need to?
Started chopping it out, and thought "best take a pic" Half of it gone by that time.

Oh, this was a repair done to it's boot loom. Nice hey?

Had an old Golf once that had a totally shagged front shock. It would bottom out at the slightest turn or bump. I jacked it up and wrapped a pair of jeans round the spring and cable tied the ends in place. It never bottomed out again.
