    7A Tuning and Modifying?

I've just bought an 1989 coupe quattro with the 7A engine. Great car and i'm realy pleased to own it. It is a little under powerd though, Are there many options avalible for getting more BHP.
    Thanks

You could start with a hi flo intake filter, better exhaust and chiptuning.

work out what you want. do you want a really fast car or one which is a little faster than now.
next work out what you can afford. double it for a conversion of any type. by the time you have all the new bolts clips and work done it'll be X2.

if you want a better sound do a system and filter. if you want power then id save my pennies and either buy an S2 or fit a turbo.

if you choose turbo then start reading the posts on here about that type of thing.

        many options for many budgets

id turbo the 7a personally. why swap engines? maybe worth having the water rail done.

id stick with the 7a fit 83mm pistons and scat rods. use an S2 sump and windage tray if you can otherwise use a diesel one. it may need some cutting to fit as does the 16vt one.

another option is to look at a twin screw charger and see if you can fit it. not sure of the bracketery on the 7a but bahn brenner do a nice kit to mount the screw to a 16vt. same head angle etc.

Because there is no lag with a supercharger

280 bhp and no lag ain't worth £3k IMO

You can get more than 280 with the right charger, but you'll never have the 500 odd bhp you can get with a turbo. It all depends on what kind of power delivery you want. I personally prefer the no lag option even if it is more expensive.

tbh once you wind an s2 up to speed it goes well.

Biggest downside which if I knew what I know now is with a 20v 7a you have a lovely noise

That plus a supercharger whine is sex to the ears

lol, yeah tho it can be annoying on some cars i've heard.

Tbh as mentioned above, if you want the speed/power then either s2 (i'd personally say would cost around the 1k mark in 3b and a bit more in aby) or supercharger (could be done for under 1k if you can source the bits easily/cheaply enough and spec the charger to match the engine size, probably a jag/merc unit imo)

Or if you want the noise and a bit better performance

get a ram air filter (I had one on mine and it was brilliant sound included)
check which you've got either an early or late car imo some run better than others
full stainless specced to the right size
tubular manifold (sometimes referred to the tube of snakes headers)
tsr head if you can find one (it is possible )
                              remap.
