    3B S2 converted to ABY..??

I'm a newbee, so please bare with me on this one.

Say you have a nice 3B S2 and wish to upgrade engine and transmission.

    1. Would it be possible to swop out the entire 3B engine and drivetrain with an ABY?
I know this would prob include the entire wiring harness as well.

    2. In another thread I was told that the internal parts of the ABY is stronger than the 3B. Can you "build" a 3B with internal parts from or as strong as the ABY?

    3. If the 3B engine could be build strong enough, would the 6 speed gearbox from the ABY fit the 3B engine?

As always, I'm interested in anything you might have to say or any inputs you may have on this matter. I'm really getting hooked on the this car and I wish to collect all the information I possibly can before buying the actual car.

    Mods:
Didn't know which forum to post this since it includes both engine and transmission?

6 speed yeah straight on providing you have the subframe, linkage, prop and mounts afaik

3b -> aby - loom swap, different rocker cover unless your going to high output 034 style or something, you can still use the dizzy for the hall sender, the internals between aby/3b afaik are the same.

What are your end plans for the car? i.e. power, transmission?

i've got a 3b which I was going to swap to aby/coil packs up until about 2 days ago and speaking to someone who's been there done that and i'm now sticking with the dizzy for the power I want.

Ross went there and proved 440bhp+ is good on a dizzy. Only other thing you might want is the 6 speed but it all depends what you want, the 5 speed can handle power depending on how many launches you plan on doing with it.

        Subframe, linkage, prop and mounts?
Sorry for my bad english, but what is the subframe?
Linkage I assume is the shafts for front a rear differentials?

        Loom = wiring harness?
        Rocker cover?
        034 style?
Dizzy is the "old" type of ignition system with single coil vs. the ABY with individual coils?

I wish to use the car for trackdays and so on. Not as a daily driver. It will be my weekend toy both driving it and building it.
As for power, I think somewhere around 4-500hp would be okay for a fun trackday toy.

I've never dragged any of my cars but I sure would like to have a strong transmission for the trackdays.

            Standalone enginemanagement?

Never worked with this so I don't really know anything about it. How does standalone work together with the cars ecu?

Standalone has to be programmed by a profesional I guess. Who would that be?

subframe is what holds the gearbox and wishbones in, 6 speed is different to 5 speed
linkage is the linkage for the gearshift

              Loom = wiring harness?

              yeah loom = wiring harness
rocker cover (3b has a black cover down the middle of the cover) aby has 20v turbo and more space on it to house the coil packs etc

for reliability 6 speed would probably be better but all depends how you drive it.

                    Linkage.. Of course!

Would you be able to borrow all these ABY parts from an S2 or RS2 Avant?

Are any of these parts available as new or would you have to find them used?

If you have to ask this many questions,

I feel you might find it hard to successfully swop ABY spec equipment into a 3b?

I know you may have a problem in your country with import duty / tax, and I don't envy your dilemma, but buying a 3b and then pulling it apart to put ABY running gear into it sounds like a lot of money and a lot of grief, especially if it is just for comparatively infrequent use a a track day car and not a daily driver. Additionally your route for sourcing of the ABY bits seems unclear to you?

Just seems like a lot of trouble for the end result.

Each to their own, but just my opinion as an a unbiased spectator.

                      Kind regards.

There were ABY/6 speed coupes made. I dont know if the coupe front subframe (which is basically the lower part of the front suspension) is the same as the avant but i dont see why i wouldnt be. The Avant and RS2 ones could be used if they are the same. Chances are that alot of the things required are no longer available so second hand is your best bet. Keep in mind that ABY and 6 speed stuff is not cheap. And ADU and associated 6 speed box is even dearer (RS2 engine code/box).

Maybe someone else can clarify as I don't know much about the 3B and 5 speed but I think the 5 speed box does not have a torsion diff. The torsion diff is the centre diff that puts power to the end of the car with the most grip, so for track day this would be useful (6 speed has this). The dizzy mentioned before is a distributor, which gives the spark to each cylinder mechanically. The ABY/ADU use a crank position sensor to give a spark electronically. I am not exactly sure of the advantage of the ABY setup but the distributor has a habit of being a PITA (plastic gears guys?) Therefore you will need the ECU and wiring loom along with the engine and box, subframe, shafts, linkages etc. etc.. You will be way more for this than a tired looking avant or coupe with an ABY already in it.

Personally I would stick with the 3B and 5 speed. Most the parts you buy to modify it (turbo, IM, ExM, IC and so on) will be transferable IF the 3B isn't working out for you. And IF the gearbox goes bang, then you can replace it then, but it may not need replacing ever. 5 gears may even be better for you, less shifting!

There are a lot of folk here who have enormous knowledge of the S2/RS2 who will keep you right

                        Good luck in your purchase

advantage of aby setup is no spark hop at high power (where the spark hops inside the distributor cap and can bend rods)

tbh as mentioned above if you have a 3b stick with it and if something goes wrong then change it otherwise it can be expensive. The 3b ain't all bad, there are some bonus points (don't have to worry about coil packs going wrong, 115ish in 3rd gear ) but there is quite a few threads on this already if you do a search.

                            Wiberg:
It is rather expensive to do the conversion, perhaps just give it some time to to see if an ABY coupe pops up on mobile.de, think it is cheaper in the end.

We could meet one day if you like, I'm in the progress of getting parts to convert to multi coil setup, then you can get an idea of the amount of work needed.

My car is currently running like 360hp and 500 Nm perhaps a bit more, I can give you info on price etc. on that setup.

I would buy this ABY, I know it is a bit more expensive but it has the carbon interior, leather seats etc. and rather low millage. I would rather pay a bit more and get the aby then convert the 3b.

As I said earlier, I'm quite new to the S2 scene so I have very little knowledge about the details of this car. Since the ABY coupes are so rare these days it sounded like a legit question if a 3B to ABY swap was possible.
