Tally up how much he has spent on buckfast and budget lager and ask what he has to show for it apart from a history of opinionated drivel, backed up by nothing more than the self righteous arrogance of the uneducated.
The difference between your cq and an N reg clio is passion. You spend money because you're passionate about your car. How it performs, how it handles, how it looks. You're passionate about quality german automotive engineering and he's passionate about making a c*nt of himself.
I'd ignore him and make a point of egging him on to race you round a few bends on a nice, wet day.

Thats what these cars are here for to make us smile and for us to love them back with lots of shiny new parts that make it better than Audi released it. New cars are depreciating more and more in the current climate yet our cars are leveling out as usually they are passed to enthusiasts alike.

Only new car I would consider buying is an A5 3ltr TDi but then I would keep that and run it into the ground too

I have nothing to add. You own and maintain your car for a reason. It'll probably still be going strong when he's replaced whatever he drives 2 or 3 times.

If it makes you feel better, I get loads of grief at work for spending getting on for £20k on my X reg RS4 (a scabby old Audi to most). Still I'm happy that mine is the most exclusive (and by far the quickest) motor in a car park full of 08 plate mid to lower range german metal, some of which will lose plenty more than 20k over the next few years.

Was going to say the same thing myself. Guy at work changes his car every 2 years and after a similar discussion made him work out the depreciation he'd lost over the last 6 years, result £18000. Now that made me feel much better and shut him up once and for all?!!!

I ve spent about £7k on my car, it doesnt have the prettiest paint, or the best bodywork, or a stereo but its bloody fast.
Some chav in car park at tesco a while ago told me how much his supra cost him, how much he spent at the tuners etc, then got blown away by my "old" car.
I ve spent less on cars than on the fuel driving them!

I think of my car as an investment, give it a dozen or so years and hopefully our cars will have achieved proper classic status and start to appreciate in value. After all there's a lot more UR's about than S2's.

I'm catching up with that amount with my daily driver avant and i've only had it a month or two. If it was the s2 then thats waaay in excess of that amount.

I've propably spent over £30000 on my -89 CQ in the last 5 years. A lot of money, but what's the options? In Norway new cars are expensive. An A5 3.0 TDI Q starts at £70000 before options A S5 twice that amount and it's still a "slow" car
People that sees a car as just a way of getting from point A to point B will never understand why we spend money on old cars. The joy / "feeling" of driving a DIY tuned/tweaked car is something they can never understand

Perhaps you should ridicule his hobby, if he is imaginative enough to have one! Actually no don't stoop to his childish level. Just satisfy yourself that you have the benefit of being able to enjoy getting pissed like he does but also you can enjoy and appreciate the feeling of accomplishment when you've improved something you like. If he's a heavy drinker then he probably can't afford to spend a lot on a car new or old. Your 2200quid at our local is 880pints worth so two eight pint nights a week and its gone in just over a year.

For me the car is a hobby. Other people waste money on equally stupid past times. It's a good thing that we're all different.
TBH I stopped adding up the bills after ~£10k, which was long ago. Anyway, my car cost >£36k in 1991, which would have bought you a nice house at the time, so imagine what the current price would be if it was available now. It makes the R8 look cheap. So if my project comes in under £36k I'll be happy, as I'm hoping to end up with an S2 that's better (IMHO) than any that could have been bought in the '90s.

Take no notice of such peoples opinions, if we were all the same what a boring world we would live in! If like me brother the car puts a BIG smile on your face every time you walk out to it/her then sod all those who ridicule you! My mate has a new M5 & he still tells me he loves my S2! Nuff said!!! Carry on as you are if it makes you happy. And just remember "old quattros never die they just get lower!"
