    RS2 or RS6

I have an immaculate RS2 with 87k on the clock in Volcano black with everything that needs doing on an RS2 done, including a 996/GT3 brake upgrade (done by the company we can't speak about but credit where credit is due!). However, I have always loved the RS6 and now with the credit crunch they do seem relatively affordable. I don't know a great deal about them I have heard about a DRC problem (assuming new suspension required) but I don't know about engine problems, turbo and brake life etc etc. Can anyone shed any light on them especially compared to the RS2?

    cheers

    Simon

Alrite Si, this was posted the other week on PH (more to do with a higher mileage RS6) but might help.

I've done a bit of research while dreaming of an RS6.

The DRC seems to be a big problem and I've seen cases where the entire system has been replaced several times on the same car at £3000 a go! I would suggest that aftermarket coilovers are a must so budget £1000-1500ish + fitting if the car's not already got them. They've also been known to munch up their gearboxes if you're not careful and I've also seen a couple with engines replaced!! Major major £££££s if either happens. I think there is a remapping mod available which claims to solve the gearbox problem so that's worth looking into. Of course you could like many RS6 owners purchase a warranty, but these will become increasingly difficult and expensive to buy as the cars get older. Heck it'll cost you £1-2k per year now! And finally the annual cost of ownership is very high with large servicing costs. Brake pads and discs are expensive and don't last long and of course you can expect to budget for a set of tyres every 10-12k at around £7-800 a set!!

IMO the RS6, although a fantastic car, is a very scary proposition especially when compared to the RS2. The RS2 is and always will be a rare classic and it will without doubt hold it's money better than an RS6. It's also pretty god damn reliable overall and as you've stated most major issues have already been sorted on your's! Even when problems occur the car's are usually relatively straightforward to work on, and with the wealth of knowledge around here and the many good resources for parts you'll rarely need to visit the local Audi stealer!

Have I put you off the idea yet!??! :mischeif: Saying all that, I would absolutely love an RS6 and if I had endless pots of money I'd definately have one parked outside.

Simon, you are still alive then. How's Germany?
              RS2 or RS6?
RS6 all day everyday, blows the RS2 out of the water.
There are some weak points that can arise.
The DRC suspension, the only times problem arise is if the system needs any part to be replaced the dealer will only replace that component, and they won't be able to recharge it correctly. If every component is replaced (4 dampers and the 2 valve banks) they then can recharge it to the correct pressure.
If the suspension is knackered and requires replacement it is better and more cost effect to replace with coilovers, plus with the addition of a set of ARB's makes a vast improvement to the handling also.
When are you next in the UK? I am sure you must owe me a beer somewhere you old scroat!!!
Gearboxes are not really an issue but fluid changes are vital, better to use a non OE oil though, though with a remap and exhaust and downpipes and a few other tweaks will put the gearbox at it's torque limits but I have not blown mine up yet.

John R (the poster on PH) is a good friend of mine.

He said he doesn't regret buying the RS6 as it is a truely awesome car, HOWEVER, you must buy one with warranty. So far, just about everything that can go wrong with an RS6 has gone wrong with his car but Audi have been fantastic about replacing everything under warranty.

So far he has had over £15k of warranty claims and I think the DRC has packed up AGAIN which will need to be sorted.

He had an E60 M5 before hand and although it was twice the cost of the RS6 and had a few niggles that needed sorting, it didn't spend half of it's life in pieces leaving him unable to drive it.

Mind you, this RS6 is only a stop gap between the M5 and his Nissan GTR which means that he will be selling it in the new year and everything (no really...everything!) that is known to break on an RS6 and more has done so.

It will be a great buy!

Still in Kraut land mate. The RS rarely gets driven to be honest hence the itching for a new toy. It has no issues whatsoever (it was maintained by some bloke near Lincoln) so I would be worried about going down that route again with an RS6 but they do look special. I must admit some of the posts from the guys here is putting me off however, it was similar when I got the RS2. I do love the RS2 and it still turns heads even here in Germany (some audi dealers have never seen one).
I have just insured the car for £460 fully comp protected with an agreed value of £17000, the insured didn't even blink at it. I will take my time and see there is no rush...yet!

The RS6 is an impressive machine - no doubt - when it goes right.... But when all those electronics and funky running gear goes bad then it could be a really expensive nightmare. The trusty old RS2 is pretty low tech in comparison. You would need the latest versions of factory diag info on the RS6 to have any chance of finding faults without getting limbs ripped off by the dealer/stealer. Even then, these exotic parts will carry some exotic prices from dealers only - its not like the credit crunch reduces the part prices.... Hence why the street value on such luxury machines goes thru the floor in recent times.

Good luck with it though - they look and sound great - lot of car for nout much money.

Lloyd my insurance is with forces financial however, the underwriters are Norwich Union!! So I would press them pretty hard. Towergate use them too yet they were asking for £710 how does that work?
It looks as though I would be best giving the RS6 a miss unfortunately. I think at this rate the RS2 may be up for sale soon as it just doesn't get used

You'd need to drive an RS6 before you decide to buy one, they are a very different car to an RS2. I've been in a tuned RS6 ( 520bhp ) owned by some bloke near Lincoln and while it was stupidly quick it wasn't 'exciting' quick, if that makes sense. All the electronics, no turbo lag and driver aids take away some of the character of a car, you just can't beat that moment at 3.5k when the RS2 gets into it's stride.
