V6 quattro sedan is calling to me...

Completely random find today on a casual browse for runround/hack... looks very tidy and with current MOT. I need to eyeball it, but anything special I should know about these 2.8liter V6 donkeys ?

Asking 900 which seems pretty reasonable on a rare '92 car that has less mileage than my S2... I just want to do more work on the S2 but needing it once/twice a week for work transport is a real barrier to that. Hence the look for a cheap runabout and this one has some appeal - damn solid looking original car and/or possible donor for an S2 Sedan project if I can ever be bothered.

    Thoughts ?

Looks like a nice motor Paul, clean and original with AC too. Would make a nice car for eating up motorway miles.

I had a 2.8 V6 Coupe for 9 years before getting the S2 and in some ways I miss it....lovely smooth engine and great sound....not an IL5 but a silky smooth sound all the same.

The post 100MPH acceleration was fairly brisk and I often think better than a homefried S2, but I am working from distant memory here. I had 163 indicated from it so it was not slow the gearing suited the torque curve (86 in 2nd and 108 in 3rd) although I often thought that the heads could do with flowing.

The engine is fairly bullet proof so you should only need VSOS's and a cam belt, but be warned, the spark plugs are damn expensive (much more than S2 plugs)

I guess the down side is that tuning is limited. The various chip vendors reckon up to 18BHP from a flowed induction system (not heads) and a chip so you would def need to flow the heads to hit 200BHP

The rest of the car is common Audi 80 stuff which you will know inside out.

My only concern is that you say 'cheap runabout' which this is not. Fuel consumption is the same as a carefully driven S2...i.e shocking

                  Cheers n

                    .

Check the door cards carefully...there are 2 patterns, one b3ish the other proper b4 and therefore s2 saloon.

Nought wrong with the 2.8 engine i've run mine for years, has been "the" most reliable car i've ever owned (touch cloth!). As Si mentioned, not much tuning potential (174ps standard i believe but can be squeezed to around 190ish)
For everyday use you can just burble around everywhere and change gear at around 2500 revs, all day every day. Its only when you start to wind it can be really thirsty.

I had a 2.6 avant q and loved it, nice engine actually very smooth and deceptively quick. Buy it

agree , I ran one between March 1994 and June 1996, possibly the nicest car I've ever had.
I think the B4 were the best built Audis. and I've had B2/3/4/5/and 6
Regularly got 28 - 29 mpg running around only 24-26 in the winter 32-33 on longer runs ( much the same as we get out the B5 quattro T Sport and that's only 1.8).

Took it to AmD, ( Oddinton with Geoff - not the more recent AmD) .
I was a regular......and he advised that 12-15 bhp was probably possible but the delivery would be much better. Mine was full of Hitachi stuff and he told me to go away as it wasn't Bosch !

Lots of throttle body & head work being done in US ( Audiworld has various threads) never any mention of costs and power tho' !!
I'd have another tomorrow but wife would me get rid of 80 Sport or A4 quattro.

A 2.8 Coupe would probably do tho'
