Oh no here we go :(

Not a lot I can say

Motorists could be paid a bounty to scrap their ageing car and buy a greener model under plans being considered by Peter Mandelson.

while its "green" credentials are dubious it sounds like a good way to help the car manufacturers shift their back log. Might even take some of the old wrecks off the road (and I don't mean the S2s so don't flame me!)

Translation:That'll teach you not to read through before you start, now you are looking at scarey photos of the inside of a gearbox.

True (until they pass a law which says they can), but it's a short step from basically paying people to get a new car... to charging people for having older models. They've already set a precedence for retrospective taxation with the car tax (increasing the tax on vehicles back to 2001). I could see how - particularly for weasel worded politicians using "green" as justification - they might explain it.

        Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

if our car is running as it is supposed to,then you cant get it greener than that!
My car had 0 emissions on last test,it was even better than newer euro type enforcement laws.

I would have thought that the polution created from producing a new car was far greater than running a 'banger' for many years!

Spot on, its all a load of nonsense to put cash in the pockets of the rich. It always is, remember, whoever you vote for, the government always gets in

Still more jobs in the car industry is good, but will it be our car industry? Would be nice to see minis being made though eh?

The fact is that any car built after 1992 has EFI and a cat and therefore is not an 'old banger' in any sense of the word. If running correctly it will be a lot less polluting the building a new f'ing car. I can't believe these numpties are actively encouraging people to get rid of a car that produces a few more grams of CO2 to get a car taht has to be built from mud and rocks and oil... cos of course that doesn't produce CO2 at all. I'm sick of all this green bull crap being thrust down my throat with only a fraction of the facts being presented, it's like the Daily Hate Mail are in government

hmm, intersesting this one. I was going to scrap my '94 passat next year, but now i'm thinking.....if I keep it Sorn'd, then the gov start offering people mega bucks to scrap their 10+ yr old car, then surely the market for these old cars will rise as people buy them to then hand in in exchange for their new car?
Say the gov give you £2k to hand in an old car - in theory I can sell my old banger to someone wanting a new car for upto about £1500 as they will still save money......

I don't think this is totally a bad thing, cars like ours that only do a low mileage a year and are well maintained should easily be able to side step any government rubbish. Bare in mind, lots of old duffers in the house of lords run old, all be it expensive cars. Lord dooda isn't going to vote for anything that sees his priceless aston martin heep on the scrap pile.

But wot it will do is help lower income families and people who aren't car nuts get rid of that 15 year old sierra/renault/vauxhaul wreck that they spend a fortune on every year keeping it going cos they never have the chunk of money to bin it and get something new. Should stimulate car sales and keep ppl in jobs too. There is a real place for the new 0 emmisions euro box, just not for me, i am quite happy with my S2, my Multivan and now my stupid caddy pickup. The later will be getting a 170+bhp engine soon for more fun and is totally impractical but thats what i want. For those that haven't a scooby about cars and don't really care as long as it goes i say let them have a cheap box that never breaks down and only babies tears come out the exhaust. More petrol for me to waste having fun!

*Yawn*.....they have no finger on the pulse of the country. After this last week, trying to convince anyone that global warming is in full effect is going to be that bit more difficult for a start

I really wish they spend some proper thinking on the big issues out there rather than just the motorist. There is enough stock on most airfields to give half the country a bloody car for free

Scrap your old car, borrow more than you can afford, buy a new car, loose over half it's value in 3 years, act all suprised when you in to trade it in that it's worth so little, automotive negative equity. Great way to solve debt. Might as well burn the money. Get laughed at by me because I buy old bangers, get them in good fettle, run them for nowt and sell them for what I paid a year or two later. Oh, and I get enjoyment from driving! Wonder how many remember that
