When I renewed my photocard the other week, they the Post Office took both the old paper and card licenses and destroyed them. They only sent the electronic info to the DVLA. I therefore received a new paper copy with my new card.

EDIT: just remembered, my postcode has changed so maybe that was why they took both but I have slept since then so it is a dim and distant memory

Just done mine by post - sent it all off with a new picture, got a new one back within a couple of weeks. The guidelines/instructions say you can continue to drive while the old one is returned to them - even our "friends" at the DVLA wouldn't be so stupid as to stop people driving just while they're having a new licence printed.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

Ahh, good, so there is the difference. If you are desperate, go to a main branch PO as it took 3 days for mine - I suspect mainly because the lazy sods at the DVLA don't have to do anything at all, just press the accept button.
