presuming the cat test was done with it proper hot too?

Not sure i understand this with the ABY though, in theory you could all run round with ABY's and no CAT's yet thats not the reality, what is the missing link here, in theory you could just walk into the MOT station and point to the book and no probs in passing with de-cats on?

I'm about to bolt up some de-cats for my 3b, so will get a good idea on the delta between pass and fail for a car required to complete the BETS test due to age. However, having said that, it just needs to pass the test, not demonstrate that the CAT is in place from memory. Will post the results.

That is exactly the point. With the current book any ABY registered before August 1995 (so most of them) can pass without CATs. As the ABY is not listed (I've read it and double checked) then following the rules of the MOT test a non-CAT test applies. It's a loophole that I'm sure they will close it soon enough but until then there is no need to have CATs.

I wasn't there when the test was done so the only way to be sure is to get it emissions tested again with me there. The HCs were up a little too, not sure what could casue that but tehy could be related. The Lambda was damaged when teh exhaust was fitted so a new one was fitted, a Beru item. I might see what the emissions are and then get a Bosch probe and try it then. Fuel economy is as bad as it ever was so I doubt that it's that... interesting one though...

HCs are up to 191 from 38 and CO up to 0.73% from 0.091%

Overall I think it needs a little more looking into, the only difference is that I have a different Lambda and the new exhaust with sports cat. Between the lambda, cat and test equipment there is something that doesn't add up. Will get it to a local garage and have it tested, the same place it was MOT'd in '08 seems like a good idea although that's local to my Mum and not me...

Very interesting Ben, my ABY coupe is due its MOT in a few weeks. In the past I have been unable to obtain a pass from my friendly but very straight and to the point MOT tester without refitting my cats. He is going via the book (or computer) and makes the car perform and pass to the limits of a ful CAT test as set out on the database he is working to. (I believe)

When I originally turned up for the first time without CATs he was adamant that he would not be able to pass it WITHOUT CATs as it would never meet the limits set out infront of him.

I wonder if I can stand next to him this time round and see whether he is testing it as 3B or ABY or what?

I would certainly love not having to put the bloody things on every year, that's for sure.

As an aside, is it possible that my car, with an AMD remap that is known to run very rich will not let it even pass the basic test???? I am still confused, and don't have any data to hand to help....

            Cheers,

Have I got this straight then - you can run an ABY without cats and pass an MOT but only if registered before 31/7/95. As mine is Dec 95 I haven't got a cat in hells chance ??

The only thing I can suggest Steve is that you ask to see the book he uses to find the vehicle. As I said I have looked in the book with Jason (UR-S4) and there is definately not a listing for the ABY engine. If he can't find your engine code in the book then he has to do a non-CAT test. He can't just assume as it's an S2 that one of the other engine codes will do.

I see what you've done there

I was trying to inject a little juvenile humour but there was a serious question in there as well. Based on what you knowledgable chaps have said am I right in thinking that an ABY registered after 31/7/95 has to have cats for an MOT
