  • Erm weird help please....

    Morning chaps and chapeses,

    Weird one,

Okay replaced the aternator belt yesterday as it had split and stripped half off in the morning, nice shiny new one, okay.

SO why this morning when just nipping up the road does the car sound alot more growly????

Was def not like it yesterday.

Only other thing wrong with the car is a water leak, Not got my high jack with me so i can't get under the car to have a look if the exhaust is going which would be my though but from one day to another??? there would have been a bit mroe of a sign wouldn't there???

Also... water leak from front of engine, signs on the side of the engine from the water manifold joint (looks like a bolt screwed into the manifold, heavily furred with pink fluff)

So come on then thoughts on the growl???

    Cheers

With regards to the water I have a spare watermanifold that will be going on to see if that sorts it out. No losing too much but may be the water pump.

The growl is def not coming from the alternator, the bearing is starting to go but showing as a rattling noise nto a growl, hear it with the widow open and seems to be drivers side, can't really get under it to have a look till the weekend.

Just in case how much are water pumps by the way??

          Cheers

I once had a funny "clack clack clack" from an over/under tightened Alt belt and not the usual high pitched "whinnnnneeee".

The belt is nto too tight, moves quite a bit when pressing the middle down between the crank pulley and alternator one. Does not come from that area if I lift the bonnet and slightly rev the car off the throttle body. Sound like left hand side, so more than likely exhaust . BUM!!!

Def coming front end though, Exhaust manifold??? Can't get my hands near it to feel any air flow though due to all sheilding still in place.

Right then been up on the ramp today and the xhaust if fine other than the ypiece on teh down pipe is a bit crushed (so will need to get my mits on a 2nd hand one !! Hint hint anyone got one)

The noise is rev related to about 1500rpm looking at the belt i replaced it seems to get a bit of a wobble on at that point so could be the cause, now is that being too loose or to tight???

                Cheers

i was always told the rough rule of thumb with belts is that you should be able to twist it 90 degrees, more than that its too loose, less then its too tight.....always seemed to work for me.
