    MOT Disaster!

    Morning,

I am looking for sympathy and some advice.

My S2 has failed its MOT on three counts this morning:

    1.) Rotten rear subframe

2.) Leaking fuel line (just behind CAT's)

    3.) Emissions

The garage are not too worried about the emissions as it was only just over (0.37)

How hard is a rear subframe to change in a single garage on your back, and can you buy them new (cost?) or should I try and find a secondhand one. Are they specific to the S2?

What is invloved in repairing or changing the fuel line? It is leaking where the pipe is clamped by the rubber sleeve.... Can the line be repaired or do you have to strip the whole thing out, what else has to be removed? Is this going to cost a fortune?

    Any advice appreciated...

    Cheers,

    Steve.

both are pretty straight forward Steve, you'll be ok - i'll give you hand if you need any help - can be heavy with diff on there too!

I'd get a decent used subframe powder coated rather than a new one (££££) you can use any coupe quattro subframe
and yuo can easily replace a section of fuel line, although they are probably the factory originals so could probably all do with replacing

EDIT: you can make them up better than new with kunifer which won't rot - fraction of the factory price

yup likewise, rear subframe is dead easy but you'll need to factor in a 4wheel alignment afterwards, so I would take a looksy at the front too and if bushes or subframe bushes need replacing there, then do that and get the most for the alignment money.

I very much doubt your subframe is rotten though....did they show you where? Probably just need to get it blasted and repainted which will be about £40-50 in my experience, just ask them to zinc prime it too.

      Cheers

i've managed to stick a screwdriver through a truely rotten suybframe before, but that had spent its life in scotland not been pampered like Steve's car

New they are over a £1000 from Audi, second hand between £50-100

Acidburn has some for sale I believe.

Thanks chaps, just sitting here licking my wounds. My fuel pipes don't look anywhere near as bad as those in Jamo's link...

My MOT tester is over cautious, I have not had a chance to have a look but I might get away with a clean up weld, paint and refit...

                Thanks,

                Steve.

TBH Steve, they can look quite bad but once you blast them, they look new again - becasue they are made out of pretty thick steel unlike your average french or jap car
I'd be surprised if yours needs replacing TBH, i took mine off my CQ and it was perfectly ok, and you've seen the rot i've had to deal with elsewhere on the car

New SF was £650 from P Daddy back in Nov '06

Get a secondhand one in good condition and powdercoat it, £100.

I rebuilt the whole rear of the car at a cost of £800 in parts, took me a weekend in the garage. All rear arms, bushes, bolts, TCAs etc. etc.

Why were the emission up, no cats? Stock cats should be in the 0.0XX region, worth getting the ECU checked in case there's something amiss.

Good luck, it'll get sorted, ready for another year of polishing!

                      Thanks Rusty,

I don't know why the emissions are up. I had refitted my cats, the plugs are pretty new, decent fuel and car has been serviced. I need to check it against my previous values to see how far out it is.

However, I do KNOW that inside one of the CATs the honeycomb is broken and moves back and forth. It may even be allowing some blow by. Having said that, Fitzy used my cats for his MOT last year no probs and they have not been on a car since then... The MOT guy reckoned it would pass with some playing....

                      Cheers,

                      Steve.

I need to get my rear subframe powdercoated also, its certainly seen better days. How long does it take to take off and replace if I have use of a ramp??

Something along the lines of 3-4 hours with a ramp and press.

There's a place in Storud called Mikris that I use, £40 and they'll zinc prime and powder coat it for you

Strange, if you can test sans CATs then you should be looking at about 150-200ppm HC and 0.7% CO from what I and others have experienced. Otherwise it's VAG com time... if your cat is knackered then get a 3" DP and sports cat sorted, should be mint with the Milltek. Could get that RS2 DP and have it sleeved 3" like the first attempt on mine, that was quite a good, cheap effort on <400bhp car.

how old are the cats. they dont last forever you know.

i have seen it proven that a cat is only at its best the first run. fitting a new cat gets even the worst of poluters through.

id be twattin it a bit
