    Vehicle Lifts

Was talking to a friend today who works on cars in his own garage a LOT more than me and he is thinking about a new style of vehicle lift that can be used in ordinary domestic garages.

Essentially its a sort of scissor platform with a hydraulic pump that is powered by 240V ac single phase supply... The platform just needs a flat surface and can be positioned under the car - with rubber feet to lift on chassis points.

Here is one supplier - http://www.garageequipmentdirect.co.uk/index1.html - follow links to vehicle lifts & scissor lifts. Are there many suppliers for these now as I'm not having much luck on web searches.

He seemed to think they can be bought new for £1000-1200 which is a lot of money for sure, but its a fraction of the price for a full-on professional style lift and you don't need a lot of height clearance to bring the car up to the point where its easy and comfy to service brakes and suspension parts. Like me, he gets really hacked off rolling round on the floor (his knees are completely wasted) working at cars and it would make a lot of jobs so much more comfortable.

then you cover up the complete underside of the car between the lifting points if i understand you correct? hard do to a gearbox change then

A 2post lift is the best thing i have ever bought, i love it soo much, it makes life so much easier, especially since in only 18 and mu back is really knackered...

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

@lind4hl - these type of lifts have shortcomings like you say - no argument there, but the price reflects that... A professional two post lift is much more versatile, but costs more and you need a LOT more height to work from - much more than any normal domestic garage in the UK for sure.

You are one lucky 18yr old *&^%&^%*£*"£ if you are playing with a 2-post lift in your own place... in my day, I had to make do with a gravel driveway, an emergency jack with a plank of wood for stability - and wheels bunged under the car for safety.

This could degenerate into a workshop equipment version of the legendary 'yorkshireman sketch' - look for that on youtube for some comedy gold.

im going to start working on custom things for cars in our company also, thats why we boought it.

                but enough of this...

as you say, working with suspension etc. is soo much better with a lift like the one you are looking at, also you can open the doors fully with one of these lifts

Dunno if you have seen these, in floor scissor lifts, pretty cool

If you painted the tops of the lift your partner would not even need to know they are there, until she walks in and sees a levitating car

If i had the money i would buy a cow shed...fill it with all the kit i needed and live in a caravan in the corner...

                            Is this normal?
