It is a way to give an indication of peak horsepower, although anything in the sub 4500rpm range is more an indication of peak torque.

The links for downloading the spreadsheet seem to be broken... If anyone can post it here I will try to make time for a crack at it. Been a while since I done a few hard sums
Rusty would be a good man for it too though. We should pick figures that work conveniently like 30-70mph on the speedo - or whatever to give the driver easy numbers to focus on.Paul Nugent

Yeah - I feel that 4200 is too low a starting point - there must be a reason it was chosen on the S4... and with so many folk on standard turbo - making max torque well before that it would seem sensible to measure any torque gains in the low-mid revs as much as peak power is the headline number most folk latch on too - I am more of a torque person !Paul Nugent

A K03 S4 is ridiculous, full torque in 2nd at 3k, lower in the higher gears!
All the calculation requires is interpolation to identify the start and finish times.
I did a 'real world performance' thread a while ago asking for 2nd gear 30 to 60 times. As VAGcom isn't as widely used we need to do it with GPS or accelerometer based speeds. Indeed, the latest Racechrono software can use any GPS enabled phone to measure any speed interval you ask it to. Sweet
I suggest another thread or an update on my old one to keep things in a thread we can find again!

I personally think that VAGCOM is the better weapon here as it sucks data straight from the ECU... I think there is too much twatting about if people need to load funky software into GPS enabled phones. GTech is nice (if expensive) as another simple and repeatable way to collect data. Youve obviously had some good experience with the GPS phone route.
In reality what we need is an OPEN spreadsheet that can calculate off roadspeed data that is sampled over time and has engine rpm data so that somewhat accurate estimates can be made. Meaning that data collected by VAGCOM, GTech or GPS phones can be pumped into it... Will be hard to compare across different methods in different cars but it should be somewhat comparative. Could have fun with all three methods used on the same car for the same runs to dial out any obvious inconsistencies.
I'll see if I can revive the old thread.Paul Nugent

The new software does all the maths so anyone who can operate a phone can get reasonable results, even better with a 5Hz receiver
Peak of 3rd in an ABY is 96mph ish so 4k is about 51mph. A 'sensible' test is 60-90 in 3rd but 35-65 in 2nd is a more realistic approach as 90 GPS will be nearly 100 indicated! Not ideal. 50-80 is a fairly simple but not high enough RPM and 3B owners will cry because they'll be left out. 2nd gets my vote for many reasons. Big turbo boys will cry about spool up but this is real world, not a drag strip.Cheers'en, AndyC

Except my 6 speed in the Cq gives an indicated max of 60mph due to wheel size differences compared to S2. Doh!
85mph is the max in 3rd.. which is why my 30-70 staying in 3rd is a quickish 4.7secs and 30-70mph in 4th (max 109mph) is 5.8secs.
Not sure what mine is pushing out but anywhere between 260 and 290bhp I'd guess!!

Found the old pic, Eric's MTM dyno resultWell had the new set up tested today and the results were down on quoted figures
295BHP\314FT\LB ,the afr is dangerously lean after 5krpm .so im thinking worn fuel pump and or injectors maxed. But most cars on the day were well down on expected figures ,ie mtm chipped RS2 in very good health did 308bhp\318ft\lb
so either both cars are poorly or the RR was well down on its true figures .
My S2 feels alot quicker than it did before but obviously to lean to be safe
