So, Jamo was the beer you´ve been drinking good?

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

If you are looking something cheap to run and service etc...

My mum had the new shape Mondeo ST TDCI spec Diesel....

Very Very well built, cheap to run, £99.99 service, good fuel consumption and I gather you can get them tweaked.... Nice to drive too...

They also seem to hold their value as long as you buy 'em right in the first place....

Now I'll go an duck the Flak thats coming........

is that a benetton F1 car Jamo? wont get my fishing kit in that.

one issue i have is getting a car where the rear seats fold.

not really a big mondy fan. or ford for that matter. its not that im after something that cheap to run etc. id get another rover if that the case. i get a car and insurance allowance from work that has built and insured the s2 and rover. now the S2 is not as much a cash cow i can divert some of it elsewhere. good thing my company car policy doesn't stipulate max age of car.

I've got an '03 A6 avant 2.5TDI quattro tiptronic for a year now and love it, a real comfortable car, great for commuting and even better on long trips (drove 5000 miles in 4 weeks last summer, never felt more relaxed). but it's not cheap, fuel consumption is 8-9 liters/100km (now even closer to 10l/100km with the cold), and a longlife service set me back 700 euro's (yes, at the stealer) without any expensive stuff done. and I know that the next service will be into 4 figures with the cam belt, and that I'll possibly will have to change the cams sooner or later.

I was looking at a C4 5 pot quattro first, but nice ones are near impossible to find, allmost all of them had 200+kmiles on the clock, engine can handle it but in the interior it shows. and imho the C5 A6 is a much more refined car than the C4 (I've had a A6 2.6 auto before). apart from having 1 cylinder too many and it's drinking habits I cannot think of a reason for wanting a C4 anymore (OK: the C4 looks better): the TT gearbox is lightyears ahead of the old 4gear auto, seats are much better, handling and ride at least equal, interior quality and looks are a major leap forward, brakes are excelent (impossible to believe that it's from the same company who put the rubbish on the S2), active and passive safety is also a lot better with ESP and many airbags.

i hear a fair few bad things about the 2.5tdi then. is a 1.9tdi a better option.

quality wise the the grimleys finest i currently own will be way below any audi quality. bet there aint an audi that can win the speedbump challenge against a rover though. they hurdle like no other.

the A6 2.5TDI certainly not, it's a heavy beast that will hit it's nose if driven anything near fast over a speedbump. my type85 cq was perfect for that....

don't overreact on the engine, the V6TDI is a fine engine, and if running costs are not a big issue, then go for that. you'll probably pay the same buying price as for a 1.9

... C4 variant 2.5 TDi Quattro Avant everytime.

Less than £2K for a decent example.
5 cylinder - so working on it gives few surprises, drivetrain is familiar and it handles deceptively well for something that's become known affectionatley as the 'mothership' - even the wife admits to enjoying driving it.

Not beautiful or overly stylish nor is it tricked up to the nines with toys, but it takes fishing gear and camping gear and tows boat or car trailer + Quattro with ease.

Proved instoppable in the recent weather and I've seen 800miles out of a tankful which was around 50mpg on the motorway. I see 40mpg unless towing or being heavy footed. I'm not intending to change mine for a long while unless my circumstances change...

Currently at 175Kmls and going strong.

                    suggestion

1st I would advise against any of the bmw's as they're crap in a wet field. How about a 03 / 04 vw passat 130 brake TDI pd saloon or estate with 4 motion. I think you'll find it has a certain torsen bit that will help off road (no diff lock). Suspension sits a bit higher than std passat, 6 sp box for economy.
I have a '99 TDI with 227k on the clock and the last 120k has been as tough a life as you could expect any car to go through. If you often drive on B roads be prepared to change bushes etc in the front but otherwise shouldn't be too dramatic.
Completely unremarkable car to look at but comfortable and fit for function me thinks?? If you can find one with the spec above definitely worth a test drive

I have a '95 C4 A6 2.5 tdi 5 pot,6 spd, 250k, 160+hp with new injector nozzles and a remap, block off EGR and de cat it, 40 mpg round town 55+ on a run.........James Bond smokescreen when you really gun it tho.......:mischeif:

V6 and 1.9 tdis suffer from the modern car scourge of the emissions control crap fooking up the engines, the inlet manifolds are small on these engines and they coke up to the point where the car has no go at all due to the clogging up!!!!This is what happens, and i've seen more than a few of them...

C5 A6 nicer more comfy car but not as much soul, same with the A4.
and they don't have the 5 pot sound..............
Find a good one and you'll be happy

im fairly open minded about it. it needs to be able to get me down bumpy lanes full of fishing gear, get through the field at glasto and look reaonable to boot.

My brother has a V70 D5 (02 plate), but then that's really a Mondeo with different clothes anyway ...it's proper reliable and certainly gives good mpg in spite of spirited driving and tbh he's been using it in the snow with no issues whatsoever ...personally I wouldn't have one but it is a decent enough motor.

One thing I don't like about it is the low tailgate height when fully open (which appears to be a function of the square styling) - even my relatively stumpy stature struggles to avoid banging my head on it when lifting bags of coal out of the back.

i have actually looked at landrovers.

i got an s2. in 2007 when glasto was pretty wet there was a 5 series touring with 4 pushing stuck. i lit a fag, put on full lock and drove round in a circle onto road. cost me 115 in juice. cost me 48 in the rover last year. massive difference.

i need to be able to get places with affecting the price of a barrel of crude.

must say im going off the v70. have looked at a 530d m sport manual. seems ok. still.....

one thing im mindful of in the runabout arena is not buying something that i will mod. it needs to mount curbs etc like a normal car. i nearly got a mk2 golf 16v but i know that would have had the fk konigsports i have on the shelf fitted and would be measured for the 16vt within the week. a bad, bad idea
