Just done an engine service on the ABY which spark plugs do you guy's recommend?
the engine has a 270bhp MTM upgrade so just wondered if normal plugs would be ok??
Cheers
I and most others on here have always used Bosch F5DPOR.
Dont buy them from audi though as they charge about £12 each! Euro carparts and GSF also stock them, so does TPS.
Thanks guys, there are ngk in it just now, which are for want of a better word crap
i'll order them in the morning!
p.s she is in the paint shop as we speak! ! ! woohoo
Mallster:
How much did you respray cost? is it a full resray including everything stripped out?
Chris
Getting engine bay, both sides and bonnet done, the painter is a friend plus i have been helping him with it, i supplied everything for the job i.e paint etc, suppose if it was a retail job i'd suspect there would'nt be much chance out of £800 mate.
F5DPOR's are the ones to go for for sub 400hp. Anything over that and the plug needs to be cooler. As for prices between GSF and main stealer.
I fitted a set of GSF ones came onto boost a couple of times and threw them in the bin as the central part of the spark plug ended up spinning freely whilst holding the metal body. They replaced them FOC as you could see they where new and again failed within a day. Fitted a set from Audi and they lasted a couple of weeks before suffering the same failure. At which point I decided the plug needed to be cooler for 400hp+ Traditionally 1 heatrange colder per 75-100hp over stock is the formulae. I ignored it as I went by recommendation of other people that where running 550-600hp on F5DPOR's.
Obviously every engine is different so I decided to go a heatrange colder and chose NGK BKR8-EIX reduced the gap to 0.6mm (factory on the F5DPOR's) and been using them witout any failures for a while now. Only difference I notice is the engine needs to crank a little while longer to start because they are a colder plug.
As for using triple electrode copper plugs definatelly not a fan of using them on a forced induction engine as the electrodes wear away at the slightest sign of detonation resulting in eventual missfire. However it does make them good for mapping as you'll wear away the electrode before doing permanent damage to your engine.
Back in the days when everything was powered by cossie engines, where i worked we built some 500hp motors and spent weeks evaluating different plugs to try and find the best for particular engines/specs and purpose they were used eg drag/rallying/circuit use.
and anyone who tells you plugs don't make a difference is FOS!! when the right plug was finally found it could make up to 20 extra reliable hp.
remember fitting a set from f0*d motorsport which were in excess of £60 a plug and that was 10 yrs ago.
If the engine is modified it is often the case of sucking it and seeing, as very rarely two engines are identical in every way, so why use the same plugs.
It's not a cheap way to find the best but thats why tuners charge- youre paying for the knowledge and experience when they do the hard work for you.
Try and find the plug spec for your particular conversion as any tuner worth his salt will have found the optimum plug for their conversion. If it is the standard spec then all the better but it may not be.
If its a home brew then the fun starts!!
bkr7e work well for cheap plug. 10 quid a set. they are the 16vt plug of choice.
denso are a little cold for everyday. on boost the were good off boost they stumbled.
stock plug by far the best at most things. good for high and low boost.
everyday car id go for stock. standard everyday id opt for the bkr7e and see how it goes. i run them upto 1.4 bar fine. after that i changed them but in reality it was coil dwell that needed a tweak.
