    Mirror Polishing Engine Parts

OK guys this is like my mini project. I have never done this before so might take me a while but I am going to post up progress ect and hopefully will turn into a howto guide.

Things required so far I have

    Detail Sander
    WD40
    Sanding block
    Lots of sandpaper
    40-60-80-120- 220-320-420-600-800-1000-1500-2000-2500-3000
    Small files

I am doing a alloy airbox from a wr ur quattro (curtisy of paulmac) for my kv coupe if it all goes well will do other parts that you can actually see.

Heres what it looked like when I got it

After 3 hours with the detail sander (40grit) and a file this is what I have got so far

From what I have read I need to get all the dark patches out before I move onto 60grit

Will update tomorrow once I have spend another lifetime sanding.

ehr.. never polished something i guess.. lose the 800 till 3000 sandpaper...[ 3000 my god.. thats the some as rubbing a newspaper against the alloy ]

you start with 80 till 400 and then 600 wett..
after this you gett a good polishmotor and some good polish blocks..
first start with sisal and brown polish block
then you work it up till your with the soft cloth and blue polish block ( unipol)
after that wih a cloth and unipol from a can afterpolish

some work of mine last months

from what I have been told it works a lot better than water when you are doing wet sanding.

well all the extra info is very helpful and the only reason I am doing the airbox is so if it all goes wrong no one will every see it if it works out rocker cover and inletmanifold will be the next parts on the list mite even give the wheels a go but wont be keeping them much longer anyway.

Have to agree, on bare metal WD40 works far better as an abrasive lubricant than water, soapy or otherwise. Obviously it's crap for sanding anything other than bare metal.
