MFTS for ABY Avant any idea where i can get one??
This is the Sensor on the coolant rail, mines on the blink as i had a leak in the pipe above it and its gone green and the temp in the car is registering incorrectly (barely rises to 50 even after driving an hour)...i'd like to replace this asap, if anyone has one or knows where i can pick one up at a reasonable price that'd be great...

    Cheers

Have you let the car idle till the fan comes on and seen what the temp gauge says?

Also has the rubber boot on the MFTS got full of gunge from the leak? you might have connector/ wiring problems.

hey guys, i've let the car idle and i could leave it all day and it barely lifts up to (50deg) it seems to work intermittently, so sometimes it works n others it lifts to 50deg!

In the time i've owned the car i've been having this prob, but something else seems to lead me elsewhere. it didnt work at all then i was given advise on changing the sensor that screws into the bottom of the main radiator, which got the needle moving to 50deg, and since then i've only seen the needle rise to 50+1 once!!

I've taken this car on a few long drives, so i'm a bit worried i'm frying this engine to shreds, although the water levels are correct and i'm sure its using more petrol as a symptom too!

If i do manage to get the needle working to 50deg i find on long motorway journeys the needle drops to zero! and cold air comes up through the footwells!

i found a leak in the pipe above the MFTS and that is all green and the rubber was full of gunk, which i cleaned n dried out!

the fan kicks in at 50deg too...sure this is wrong!

but still the same situation... please someone help! i've spent a load of money on this car since i bought it, slowly putting things right with it and i'm at my wits end with it, just wanna enjoy it for a while at least!

is there another thermostat i dont know about? or are we talking about the one in the radiator??

The car will use more petrol if the ecu is seeing the water temp as 50 degrees, mine would get upto 88-90 but as soon as your driving it would drop down again.

The stat is located on the side of the block under the inlet manifold and water rail, you should see the water pipe from the radiator connected onto the the stat housing when you look down there but you need to remove a few things to get at it.

Personally I would put a stat in it first, its a easy enough job and a new MFTS is over £100 from the stealers iirc so I'd start with the cheaper fix !

i'm gonna sound really annoying now, but you dont have a piccy of location, what i'm looking for? i'm not the most aware person when it comes to the S2 engine bay....

Is there a way to test the thermostat? is it a dealer only part?

cool, i've jst taken a look at the car,

under the coolant rail where the MFTS is jst in front (towards the front of car), is it the small plastic looking thing, its got two spade connectors coming out of it??..

assume i'l need to remove hose...

The thermostat is behind the long silver thing in the picture, held in place by 2 M6 bolts. Directly under cylinder 1, the stat has no wiring going to it whatsoever.

You need to remove the hose, possibly the pas hose too so you can remove the plastic shield that covers it. From there on its a simple enough job

Once removed, you can test the stat by putting it in boiling water, if it moves it should be working ok

I think you maybe have issues with the stat and one of the sensors, if the heater starts bolowing cold that the engine overcooling itself wich is down to the thermostat staying open all the time, its supposed to close and restrict the water going through the rad to maintain the water at the correct temp all the time regardless of 70mph on a cold night or traffic jam in summer. Mine is doing the same as yours, heater blows cold after a few minutes at speed on a cold night but blows warm in traffic so I'm sure its the thermostat. On the other hand my temp needle goes up and down with the temp, so in traffic it reads 80-90 but on the motorway it reads 50, so I'm pretty sure my sensor is ok. BTW I think there's another temp sensor on the back of the head, cant remember what its job is though, maybe ecu.. Another normal mode of failure for the MFTS is that the overheating light comes on when the car is at normal temp, this can be fixed by giving the MFTS a sharp tap with the end of a breaker bar or similar...

John, your fault and the other chaps is identical to both the S2's I've had, stat fixed them both.
