Old stylee fast cars - how powerful really?

"The fastest 2-litre 4-door saloon" - that was the claim for the Triumph Dolomite Sprint back when I bought a second hand one in about 1981. It had 127 bhp with a (unusual in those days) 16 valve engine.
    0-60 in just under 10secs.

So... I just wondered, how powerful and how fast, or slow REALLY were those olden days cars... the ones we all might have been able to afford..

The Triumph TR8, Lancia Beta HPE, Vauxhall Firenza HB (is that right?), Opel Monza, Jensen Interceptor (well a childhood dream car), Renault 5 Gordano (whatever) and later the Sierra Cossie.. etc

    What d'ya know?
    SOLD !

Stage 1 Cossie will show a clean tea tray to a Homefried S2, BTDT. Seriously old skool handling too, if you're not looking out the side window then you're parked.

Can't comment on too much else other than Capris and VWs but remember that while power figures are low, they weigh f all so light tuning can result in some serious performance... just don't tackle any corners!

Notice Opel Monza in your list. It wasnt that fast at all as it was a heavy beast. Its 3l straight 6 produced iro 170BHP but the GTE Opel Manta had a 2.0l and 110BHP but was a faster 0-60 at 8.5 secs. Even a Factory fresh Genuine (road) Manta 400 had only 144BHP I think from a 2.4.

            Of course!
The 2WD Saph Cossie is 1250kg, rather less than the lardy S2!
Stage 1 is ~275bhp, so similar to a homefry

Manta GTE's were not that fast, from own experience I know that a mk1 Jetta GTI was a lot faster

First exposure to more 'powerful' cars was an ex Hants Constabulary Senator 3.0CD

Dad to this day still doesnt know how that exhaust managed to make it just 6 months from having it redone.

I might have left bits of it on a few humped bridges

                Never see Mantas/Senators/Monzas about anymore

So whats the weight of your car now you've dropped it down a bit?

wonder what a 20v RR with a remap will compare like as i'm not sure about the wikipedia weight of one and how true it is?

Estimate is -100kg on a stock car (as I have no AC any more). I'd hope for about 1450 + me, power is about 300bhp. As Rustynut will testify, it goes some at the mo

My 318is is 20 years old and has approx. 160bhp. I managed to do a timed 6.85s 0-60 (average of 10 runs) in it last month, old technology with a newer style engine. There's nothing like it available main stream nowadays, for one thing you can see out of the back of it (unlike a few hatches I sat in today!), for another thing, it's light, 1100kg or so for a B class car.

don't put much faith in this but:

Kerb weight 1,290 kg (2,844 lb) to 1,350 kg (2,976 lb)

the 1,350kg is the 20v (providing its accurate)

I'm interested to know if thats correct and what a remapped one will go like compared to a cossie.
