Cheers Jay. That will be very interesting indeed - look forward to seeing you complete that!
I am putting an homefried ABY into my WR to run with RR/200 20v lightened flywheel and 016 box. Paul's map will produce around 420-430 Nm of torque so an uprated clutch is a must for me -especially if I need even more of the torque drug down the line.
wow, thats almost exactly what i want to do, except im using an AAN instead of the ABY

Harvey - It is a completely stock AAN engine, was going into my typ85 Rally Replica but its going to be rebuilt for my mk1 golf project. From memory it was advised to upgrade the stock sachs clutch if going above 300lb/ft i think?
thats going to be awesome. will you have to cut the bulkead? surely it will be a tight fit but totally worth it

Good stuff. We can compare notes on progress/ideas etc. Even though there will be differences in the AAN/ABY approach there will be a fair bit of commonality as well. Some really good stuff on this forum to help and also a thread on quattroforum by Adam G entitled "20v ABY into a WR" IIRC should be a read for you to build up a picture of some of the things to consider. The ur 20v conversion is not something to take lightly and will have its share of headaches but as Darren says the transformation is so fundamentally good it is easily worth the bother. IMO the WR and ABY/AAN engines are seperated by an era in internal combustion engine technology and design -we are making a move in the right direction!

You'll be fine with std clutch.

Porkkis who are you directing that to. If me I would be interested to hear more as I intend to run 420-430 Nm of torque and currently have a Sachs clutch (stock for WR turbo which has design maximum torque 285Nm). You reckon a clutch for that design spec could handle over 400Nm?

I had a standard Sachs driven plate with an uprated cover plate. Effectively applying more pressure, my 10v with stand alone management producing 320ish hp (not sure on torque) made the standard job slip easily.

Porkkis may well be referring to the standard 20v clutch which would put up more of a fight.

Yes I suspect that myself as the stock clutch on an S2/ABY engine would have had a design spec well in excess of 380 Nm to handle the overboost option, in which case it probably would handle 420-430. Alas my clutch is for a WR engine which I suspect will give up the ghost all to easily with such heady torque. As before uprated clutch is a must for me only a question of which one.

Darren what did you go for by way of flywheel in the end?

                I used a 200 3b which was significantly lightened.

Ah, yes I ment the 200 3B combo which is also used in some 10v engines.

Just how light Darren? Stock 200 20v is around 17lbs. How much did you trim off it and how has that impacted on driveability?

Not sure on the final weight. i was more concerned on moving it from the right place to have maximum effect i.e. the periphery. Its now about 10mm thick and the shoulder has been removed leaving just enough meat for the timing pin to locate properly.

Drive-ability is fine the paddle clutch can snatch a little but that's just a matter of getting used to it.

I also lightened the front pulley i.e. removed the unused belt grove etc and dished the center out this pic kind of shows what i mean....

You didn't miss a trick. That engine bay still inspires me and I must have saw at least a dozen pictures of it by now!

Indeed - a real achievement. How long did the whole thing take you because attention to detail/quality to that level is really bound to be very demanding of time?

The 20v conversion took 2 years, the time is in the development "put it together measure something take it apart" x 200 times.

I have been painting the car for the last 2 years.. should be out this year... Its moved on from the picture, doors are on wings bolted on correctly, circles and stripes back on just need to do the bumpers....
