As title suggests something disatrous nearly happened today which could have had dramatic consequences on my s2 and more importantly ME! coming up the a19 today and it felt a little rough steering wheel had a bit shake and rattle on it but nothing to bad but slowly getting worse went another 10 mile and after 2 more stops to check things were ok it was getting worse pulling up at the round about i could barely turn the wheel pulled up and my front passenger side alloy was hanging off 3 bolts were off and 2 barely in!! Its a god damn miracle it didnt come off but what a bloody fright!! I think my morale of the story is after you get a company to put your new alloys on always check!!
The unthinkable???

Always do....
And its the first thing I would check...
Had the same thing happen to me many years ago with a Renault 18 Turbo I owned...
Garage put in a new drive shaft and swapped the front and rears for me and then forgot to tighten ANY of the 16 Nuts.....
Fecking scary when you are 18 and know **** all about cars...
Hence why I always check 'em...

We offer a free wheelnut check on any vehicle we have worked on for this very reason. They should be checked within 48 hours or after 100 miles as a rough guideline.
Some customers have them checked, but not all as they don't seem to see the importance!
Glad you are OK and didn't loose the wheel completely.

happened to my sister in her metro years ago
front wheel came off and ended up in field, she ended up on opposite roadside
less than 10 miles from garage where she had just had new tyres fitted
tyrefitters denied all responsibility
they still got a real mouthful from my father thoughComment

Metros! I loved mine! Despite one of the wheels breaking on three out of the 4 'spokes'. Hard to explain but metros steel wheels have 4 slots in them, and three out the four bits between them broke in the space of a mile. Driving fine, steering wobble, bad steering wobble, wtf, stop, holy f!happened to my sister in her metro years ago

yep...you should try it at full chat on th Ring, Rusty can tell you all about it 3 up through Wipermann if i remember correctly.....gulp
Unless you have seen them finish with a torque wrench and they have asked you what value to use I'd be pretty sure it was the first thing to look at after i got back home. Tend to check in the first 50 miles anyway just in case but sounds like a lucky escape!!!sigpic

Didn't know what it was till we got back to the hotel. When I found out it was the wheel I was a strange mixture of relieved (as it should be easy to fix) and scared shyteless at what could have happened!Cheers'en, AndyC

Check you have the correct type of bolts for the new alloys, there are curved and tapered types. Audi ones are curved and most aftermarket ones are tapered (the place in the wheel where the bolt seats is either cupped or V shaped)Comment
