    Interesting Shell petrol Email.

This is a reply I received from Shell.

Supermarket fuel is not of the same quality as that of the major manufacturers.
The reason being that supermarkets buy the fuel on the 'Spot' market so there is
no gurantee as to the additive package you will get with the fuel. With the
Major Manufacturers such as Shell, BP, Mobil etc. there is a guranteed additive
pack added to each batch of fuel so there should be no variation in the quality
of the product you put in the tank.
The additive pack will include cleansing agents called detergents which keep the
injectors and engine clean and prolong engine component life. Typically in a
supermarket fuel you would get 1 dose of detergent additive, compared to 2 doses
in a Shell, BP, Mobil etc standard unleaded. Where as a superunleaded such as
Shell V-power in addition to being higher octane rating would typically contain
    4-5 doses by comparison.

Go to the BP website or a motorshow where BP show the video of an engine cut in two showing the build up on the valves using cheap supermarket fuel

Never had problem with Tesco 99 ron. I use Tesco and Sainsburys in all my cars.

Do you think the refinery stops production to especially make crap fuel for Tesco and then starts up again with good stuff for Shell?

Tesc0 99 is different, most of this is aimed at the 95 ron supermarkets sell which is pure crap

come on.....are you really suggesting that one dose rather than two of detergent will cause your car to run ***** and turbo to explode. which garage said ah yes, your turbo blew because of poor fuel, love to know the diagnosis

ALL fuel has to attain a BS quality mark....seems much of what Shell said in its email was BS in my opinion

Sure, thereare variations on the top end potions, but supermarket petrols fuels 95% of all cars running on the road and as far as i remember there are not piles of cars on the hard shoulder that didnt make it home from the filling stations

They issue with supermarket fuel certainly in my area was water and grit caused loads of injector's and pumps to pack up but with the increase of people using supermarket fuel the quality of fuel is higher as the stuff does not hang around there any more like back in the early days these guys are getting the storage tanks filled every second day
Because of the early days of supermarkets branching into fuel being crap the reputation has stuck

                      cheers Raj

                        Point taken.....

I believe BP has more conceirn about cheap "oil piping" "and oil valves" cutted in halfs rather then motor cutted in two or motor valves.... nowadays.....

Hmm the response by Shell is very misleading.
Firstly all fuel supplied to Sainsburys is BP fuel and has the same BP additives.
Secondly, Tesco 99 RON is superior to Shell V power and is produced specially by a company called GreenEnergy. It has additives/detergents etc just like VPower does and seems to have a better RON.
Thirdly, all the oil companies tend to share terminals so for example the Bunceford terminal near Hemel Hempsted was used by most of the oil companies plus supermarkets particularly for 95 RON. i.e. it was the same basic fuel delivered to every tanker irrespective of oil company. What happens is that the tanker drivers tend to put in their own brand additives.
The problem caused by silicone contamination in fuel delivered to some Morrisons/Tescos related only to 95ron fuel in a certain area and was caused by cross contamination from diesel fuel stored in petrol storage tanks without adequate rinsing.

i'd understand "detergents" are household cleaning stuffs.
for petrol / fuel, the politically correct way of saying is "additives".
the greater the additives, the more expensive the fuel costs....
take diesel for e.g. higher additives to reduce the amount of lead or plumbum so the diesel fuel gets efficient.

Some of the additives are detergents.
