    Aqua Blasting for aluminium parts

Well I bought my s2 about 6 weeks ago now, and I really wish I hadn't!!

Just about everything has gone wrong on it

Started blue smoking due to using oil, at a rate of about 1ltr per 150 miles, turbo was f*cked, £420 for a new one. then it lost all performance and I had to replace the coilpacks at great expense, was fine for a little while then kept loosing performance and going onto overboost again, ended up fixing various boost leaks, new n75 and new dump valve.

And best of all, last week, just over 1000 miles after buying the car, the f*cking head cracked. Its costing me £1000 in parts alone to fix it and if it wasn't for a really top forum-member sourcing the parts and helping me to do the work it could have cost twice that. I know you'll all say "when its done it'll be worth it" but right now I hate the thing for costing me so much money.

Anyway, doing all the work has turned into an under-bonnet restoration so at least when its all done it will look nice. So I took some aluminium parts to a local company (Poole area) called Pheonix Engineering, where he sandblasted and aqua cleaned the metal. This is not a coating, just a method of cleaning.

It comes up extrememly well and unlike natural aluminium, oil and dirt doesn't seem to stick to it, its almost like theres a film of laquer on it (but there isn't), so you can just wipe it clean if you get oil on it. I'm chuffed, see what you think

Not sure why the camera has picked up white spots on the rocker cover as you can't see them normally.

sorry to read about all the issues you're having but getting some nice shiney bits back for it is always a good way to get that smile back, they look great. How much did it cost to get them cleaned?

i use one of those machines on a daily basis just be wary when dealing with any engine components that you are sure to clean all the media out thoroughly before refitting as the stuff gets everywhere and can do a lot of damage if circulated round the engine.

it cost me very little as when I turned up I found out I already knew the bloke from doing capris

he would normally charge about £15-20 for something like an inlet manifold or a rocker cover, but obviously discounts can be negotiated for numerous bits. Compared to the time, effort and expense of trying to paint something its a bargain, and the finish is better than any type of paint as it cant be scratched or burnt off.

As for cleaning the media out you are quite right, after sand blasting it will be full of grit, but the aqua cleaning process removes all of this as well as giving the surface finish.

My dad had his engine bits vapour blasted, i believe this is the same process. His engine looks great now.

              Really nice OEM look

^^^lol that's the problem once you clean one bit the rest looks pants so you end up cleaning the lot. Cylinderheads are the most grief as all the oil galleries have to be unplugged and replugged to ensure no grit remains in them. Saying that the alternator is no fun either as you have to pop the bearings out the casing :-)
