Insurance companies are so stupid sometimes - I went thru some grief with mine when changing cover from S2 to the V6Q - they wanted more money as it had a bigger engine capacity and I had only just acquired it - deemed as higher risk to them. Took a lot of hot air to convince them I had been driving a more powerful car for ~10 years without a claim before they finally saw some sense and did the swap for no extra money.

I would swap being 25 again for 4X on my insurance premium, but I'm not taking a salary cut

The system is just too simplistic. I'm not denying that young males are responsible for the highest number of accidents, but besides NCB, using age as the sole gauge of driving ability?

Now, any additional negative factors - eg .speeding points, they'll happily count against you. No care for positives, though: 5 years motorcycle NCB? Nope, doesn't count for ****. IAM test? Okay, we'll take it down from £4k to £3995... Driving a higher-risk and category car as a named? Don't care...

The insurance companies then preceed to whine about how uninsured drivers are costing them money.

When you consider that the average 17 - 20 year old earns £12k or less (ie. <8k after tax), it's not hard to see why they would find it genuinely difficult to pay £4k a year insurance! Are we really surprised at the number of uninsured young drivers, considering this?

There's plenty of older people pointing fingers, but I wonder how many would continue to do so if their premium was half their net salary?

The worst thing really is there's nothing you can do about it. Just wish your life away. Don't get a car until you're 25. What happens then? 25 becomes the new 17; inexperienced drivers start gettings cars in their mid 20s and drive premiums up for their agegroup.

Then they'll tell us to wait until we're 30.

Okay, I promise I really will stop ranting now

Just a note about Admiral. They are the first company I've ever been with who have asked for "proof" of no claims (After taking out the policy, of course!). Make sure you can find yours - incase of a nasty shock a couple of months in.

Been driving for 21yrs now and this is the first time I've had a letter which basically said "prove it - or loose it!"

Mine auto-renewed with flux when i was in the US.

Was ~£1600/year, 4 years protected NCB, every little last detail declared, £7500 agreed value.

Now £1400/year, 5 years protected NCB etc.

One of the main reasons i bought an S2 was because, at the age of 19, i could have such a powerful and capable car for *only* £2k/year insurance.

When did you start adding mods to yours? What was the initial increase from stock -> first declared mod?

Yeah, comes out far cheaper than anything else in its class. I've done enough quotes myself and the S2 comes out sod all higher than a P.O.S. Corsa...

For the sake of <£200, I know which one I'd pick...

                            It's just a major rip-off. Period.

I was "only" paying 480 EUR (423 GBP ) when I was 32 and I even told my insurer it had been upgraded to 250 kW. The only drawback was that I was limited to 3500km per year which was plenty as it wasn't my daily or vacation car.

The premiums in the UK are simply ludicrious, based only on keeping the stickholders ( stockholders ) happy and not based on actual facts, statistics or anything reasonable.
In all fairness, how can you expect someone to fork out 6000 GBP for a car worth 1000 GBP ? You simply can't say it's reasonable coz it f***ing isn't.

I'm no expert of the UK insurance legal aspects but how come the value of the car doesn't seem to have impact on the premium. Hearsay in the grapevine has told me that a 22 year old in a new Corsa pays almost as much as the same kid in a 10 year old Corsa ???

I envy the UK road tax but that envy ends when you consider the whole picture: insane insurance premiums, the amount of cloning going on, the amount of ASBO's against cars in cities, dodgy MOT centers that clearly shouldn't certify certain cars that officially have a valid MOT and to top it off a National Registration office that allows to send a new plate to a different address then the one that's on the form.

I think it's more the 3rd party liability nowadays. With injury claims etc. the cost of replacing a £1k or £10k car is minor comapred to a £100k personal injury claim etc.

Then all non-uk car insurance companies should be bust by now, but they clearly aren't.
