Just had some guy on radio Leeds saying how the Vauxhall dealer told him not to fit winter tires, because they would be dangerous and the power of his engine would shred them

Got the snow tyres on my 80 from last year. Goes anywhere! scandiavian flick and its a drift machine!

As for the pics with two foot of the stuff on your cars, get it off! it weighs a ton!
I did try that but I'd lost too much momentum going round that 90 left at the bottom, there were too many parked cars to be throwing it around too much! Also, the grills at the front were blocked with snow and ice so she was getting a bit warm.

Driving to work this morning I wondered why it seemed to have developed square wheels overnight, when I stopped to check the insides of the wheels where full off compacted snow and ice throwing the wheels out of balance

About tire shredding: If burning circles: yes. Normal driving: no

I've got 600+ in my Coupe Q and no problem even with the soft nordic winter tires we use in Norway.

There are some good pictures and stories here.
Good work Andy P. Love the snowplough moment. A bit of extra ground clearance would be nice in the snow sometimes.

Here in Mid-Devon we just got a half inch of snow on Friday, which hung around until we got another 2 inches (4 news inches) last night. No chance of getting the van out, so the A3 it is.

As for buying winter tyres in the summer, did anyone else try? I did, and got told to call back in October/November, as they didn't have any in stock. In fact I've been told there won't be any more Vredestein Snowtrac 3's made until February. The Dutchies must be too busy smoking weed over the winter, or something.
I do still have 2 cars here on winter tyres, so it's not all bad.

People may laugh at the chaos in England when it snows, but the fact is it could be -5°C and snow today, but 10°C and rainy tomorrow. It mostly depends where the wind is coming from.
Some winters we get snow, some we don't. TBH it is pretty hard to plan for. Most people just don't want to buy a set of winter tyres they may never need to use.

It would be great if we settled into a cold period over winter, the snow was left on the roads and we could all fit studded winter tyres to our cars, but that doesn't happen.

I do think people underestimate how cold winters can be here on this island, certainly here in the Southwest when it's 0-5°C, dull, damp and windy. The cold really gets into your bones.
I'd much rather have -10°C, dry, sunny and calm like we had for a spell last winter. It just doesn't feel as cold.

Actually, re winter tires, here's a thought: would it be cheaper to pick some up on the continent? I mean, wouldn't justify driving out there, but if one were there anyway (eg. next 'ring trip)?

I'm guessing they're cheaper there anyway due to higher/more consistent demand?

So, **** has hit the fan here as well
The snowfall that went through western europe got here as well.

Except... while it was passing over scandinavia, it developed into a little storm. Wind gusts of 25 m/s...
Currently getting about 3cm of snow every hour.

                    Lots of fun though.
Here is a short crappy mobile phone video out of my car, driving on one of the major roads in my small 100 000 people town:

                    Boost at 1:20

The smaller side streets and parking lots are not cleaned, so more fun there.
This will continue until saturday, and then the temperatures will rapidly fall to -22C.

                    Winter has arrived

                      Ouch!

Looks like a bit of a snowstorm.

It seems to be slowly thawing here.

Hehehe... yeah, no thawing here for a couple of months I think.
Usually we get those sub 20 degree temps in february, but it seems that it will happen earlier this year.

I'm really finding it hard to find any tyres even my girlfriends dad can't get them from his suppliers just don't want to get stuck on the way through highlands......
