I've found myself checking these out in for sale ads from time to time but it seems from this report and thread on PH it's more of a steady eddy. Would still like to bring one for a drive.

If you were going to get one of those, you might as well save up and get one of these: Linky. Now that would be a great Q-car.

Passat is still a great motor though!

Is it not the handbrake? Or something to do with it. My dads boss has just bought a 09 plate RS6 avant and has a VW Phaton 5.0 V10 Diesel for sale he had it remapped to 520 bhp but it kicked out a little smoke as they do when mapped so he had it detuned to 460bhp
Just some finishing touches to do now

Handbrake pedal. Push down to engage handbrake and AFAIK it releases automatically when pulling off.

Isn't the Phateon (Stupid name) basically a Bentley with VW badges?

Didn't they cost like 100K new?

                    100K - 16K in a few years - OUCH!!

I hate to say this, but my inner snob says that if I were to spend that much on a car, I'd want it to at least have Audi badges.

(yes, I know how terrible it is to "buy for the badge"... but still)

It does share the platform with the Bentley, but there's enough differences to tell it isn't one. There's nothing wrong with a poor-man's Bentley, but it will always be the poor-man's version.

There's obviously the A8 packing the W12 to consider as well (which has the advantage of aluminium). In fact, the existance of that is what surprised me about the existence of the Phaeton - it's almost self-competition. The way VAG intended it I believe was for the Phaeton to be the less-sporty, more luxo version... but then the A8 is hardly lacking in lux

they actually share very few parts, suspension/brakes/ all different, engine has twin turbos etc.... i always try and cross referance parts from the part number on bentleys in vag cat but all the main stuff is different stuff thats the same tho is often cheaper from bentley than tps tho

can pick up an 04 gt continnetal now for bout 35k, big drop from over 100k new!!!

servicing still just as expensive tho unless you come to me

                            :

I totally agree, I really dont understand the point of a W12 Passat or the newer R36 Passat, at the end of the day, well...its a Passat. Ok, as a diesel company car (if the company couldnt stretch to an Audi or Bimmer) it probably a good car, but would I spend my hard earned on one....not a chance!!

I have no idea what they go for,but if your not to worried about badge/image etc, what about an Octavia VRS? I would go for an A4 or A6 personally..

I think Audi is the only car company where it's actually ok to admit to being a badge snob. I wouldn't have a W8, however the Phaeton somehow manages to overcome the badge IMHO. I see it as quite a prestige machine..
