People who are rough have terrible problems in the snow, driving smoothly is very rewarding in snow, until you have to come to a sudden stop becaust some **** pulls out in front of you Other drivers normally worry me most in adverse conditions as many appear incapable of driving in them.
Thats another subject, you leave a safe distance only for some :corey: to think, oh, theres a nice gap, I'll pull into that! , usually approaching a junction! Also why when people start to wheel spin do they think more revs is gonna solve the problem?

So, you're saying that quattro isn't necessary, a 2wd is just as good so long as you can get moving? So if I got moving on snow in my 2wd car, even slowly and didnt adjust my revs I wouldn't wheel spin even on a hill. That is what I was wanting to know, thanks.

I did manage to get the A6 out (got out early before others tried and wheel spun the snow into a skating rink), so technically I didnt get stuck .
      Missed that bit....

Given the choice I would sooner be in a 4WD over a 2 but like you my S2 is off the road....

Given also that my missis has a Fiesta ST150 with proper performance tyres it's a total bag of pooh in ANY snow... just useless as you can't get any proper smooth control over the throttle... My Mk2 golf was 5 time better than hers and that's with the same person driving... Me...

So it's not a cut and dried case!!

Thats a hugh issue in the cabby, throttle response is poo, I think it has a fault, far better in the diesel, just let it ick over.

i am a farmer living in rural northumberland, we've had 5 weeks of white fields with virtually no snow ploughs on the side roads and absolutely no gritting whatsoever

our a4 avant tdi 2wd has been unable to be used for fully 4 of these 5 weeks

i have been folding rear seats down and using my 3b s2 to take emergency supplies of silage/ feed/ defrost water drinking bowls for my parents cattle at our other farm 2 miles away

i have done this on summer tyres and have not got stuck once

my father watched me pull away in 2nd out of a hard packed yard, heading up an incline and said he could see the front wheels spinning for a good few seconds until the rear ones started gripping and then i was off...would this be the fluid in the Torsen taking its time to "sense" ??

my parents are pretty impressed with the contribution the 3b has made to the business over this time and are less likely to complain when i use the business card to pay for fuel!!

car does now stink of cattle feed and has a damaged sill sustained from hard packed snow on a side road (grounded out on that side but DID NOT lose traction )

only negative points were on minus 11 days having to climb into the car through the boot because of frozen door seals!

am now on a look out for a 1.8e B3 audi 80 quattro for next year....felt bad putting the 3b through this but business bought the car so hey...

Got to be quattro everytime for me I have to say and get a decent C4.
I cannot fault my s6 even on uniroyals it managed to get to the top of Dartmoor with no slippage at all.
I love the c4, may even be selling my father in laws 2.8 quattro saloon in the new year, if I can prise it off him.

Thats rubbish, the quattro will have twice the traction on the same tyres, if the hill gets steeper or slippier then the 2wd will lose traction and start to spin up first.

Having said that I've driven a lot of peoples cars out of icy car parks and up hills for them by being reeeally smmoooooth One of the best was the guy from the local shop with his van full of cash and carry, he got stuck on the hill outside my house, van was full and weighed a ton.. I did it by just leaving it at tickover and very gently modulating the clutch. Smoothness is everything. When the snow was deep around here there were 2wd cars parked at the bottom off all the hills on the A25 between Dorking and Guildford.

I have owned and driven numerous cars and 4x4 trucks over the past fifteen years in British Columbia and can honestly tell you my B4 quattro is by far the best thing in the snow. With good snow tires that is.

I used to drive taxi in Whistler about ten years ago when we all had ls1 powered caprices (ex-cop cars) with rwd. With proper tires, momentum and careful throttle control we could get almost everywhere. Plus the bonus was the speedo (and meter) were attached to the rear wheels which were always spinning! It was a blast. Then they replaced all the cars with FWD so I quit.

Fwd cars with really skinny, studded snow tires are really good in the snow if you master lift off oversteer. That said they are rarely fun in the snow, just able.

Quattro's are spectacular in the snow. I just went upto Mt Washington on vancouver Island on the weekend. They had 235 cm's of snow in the 48 hrs before i went. In the village! On the parkway on the way up I got stopped in a massive line up of cars on their way to the ski hil. Stop/start for 20 minutes on a snowy icy inclined road. Didn't spin a tire once. No chains (although almost every one else had them) just good snow tires. On the way back down there was no one in front of me for a while so I had a little fun...... actually a whole f'n lot of fun!

Thats the difference between these and almost every other car. You actually look forward to alot of snow, rather than being stressed.

Although the other drivers who aren't in them still scare me

On a side note out here in BC most of the cars in the ditch in the winter are 4wd SUV's!

Same applies to the quattro, likelihood is that a 2wd with snow tyres will do as good as a quattro on summers. A quattro with snow tyres will go anywhere, until you belly it and the tyres no longer have any weight on them.
Correct I had a v6 2.8qs manual and it was crap on snow with summer tires ................I now own an rs6 on winter tires and its fab I really think winter tires should be mandatory

Because I do have friends in UK (from London to Glasgow to Aberdeen and Islay) and I spend few years of my life in UK i can say then that on "Take it or Leave it" I have then to: "leave it".

All that you say (wich I agree with) applies in easy flat or sloping town roads with few inches of snow.
Driving in snow (with a good quantity of ice underneath) on alps/mountain pass/roads (with an outside temperature of minus 15°/20° celsius) it's completely and utterly another issue......
