Do you not also think that alot of this is "also" down to the Actual Driver!!

I never got stuck in my MK2 Golf with summer tyres on...

Lots of other peeps did... High gear for going up and low gears for coming down hills!! and don't use the breaks until you have tooo all about anticipation...

We seem to have lost the "Art" of driving in this country!!

              NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER!!

People who drive smoothly on tarmac will do well on snow.

The same system applies, you're just dialing in less grip (and often less visiblity).

I'd agree with you to an extent, however, if you aren't getting traction, all the anticipation in the world isn't going to help. As said, once I got out of my street I drove around taking it easy, using gearing like you say to go up\down hills, but.... as soon as I got out the drive the wheels started to spin on the snow\ice. Even clearing it didnt help unless I was going to do the whole street (BTW, when the snow melted, there's lumps out of the tarmac where a couple of guys tried that ) I live at the end of a cul-de-sac which happens to be at the bottom of a very steep hill, so no 'run up' is possible. Also on my way back into the street I have a failry steep hill to climb, going up in 3rd and maintaining revs (didn't boot it half way up), I got 3/4 the way up, the wheels started spinning and I started sliding back down the hill. It all depends I suppose on the specific roads you were driving on. If I lived 1/4 mile away on the next street (where I ended up leaving my car for a week) I too would say it wasn't an issue, I never got stuck.

I've seen a few people with the attitude 'I'll be OK, I know how to drive on snow' come a cropper, of course tho, it wasn't their fault .

Rubbish... if you have traction it's all about keeping it moving... Gentle throttle contol and very low revs....

As you say, 'if' you have traction. What if you don't? How do you get traction when you start on a hill from a standing start?

You only need to get moving... so dig a couple of feet out in front of it...

How much better is quattro than front or rear wheel drive?

                              Why its twice as good!

Easier to move off/accelerate, I think easier to corner with care/respect, however exactly the same under braking, more stable under engine braking however.

Can be very deceptive as easy to build up speed and then be unable to stop or go just end up going straight on.

When we had our snowy spell the only cars that left our street and returned were quattro or 4x4 jeeps, everything else was abandoned for about a week. Was well funny driving past people with 30k+ cars in our "scrap" motors.

Tyre width makes a huge difference, having used 195/205 and then going to 225s loses a huge amount of grip in the snow. Only real problem I had this year was running out of ground clearance and tearing off the fuel return line and also when the snow got too deep and the car started to plow.

My girlfriend much prefers my quattro in the snow as she can just trundle around without difficulty, much easier to move off.

People who are rough have terrible problems in the snow, driving smoothly is very rewarding in snow, until you have to come to a sudden stop becaust some **** pulls out in front of you Other drivers normally worry me most in adverse conditions as many appear incapable of driving in them.

No, as said in my first post, that's the issue, my S2 is up on axle stands in the drive, I was in the wife's cabby.

So, you're saying that quattro isn't necessary, a 2wd is just as good so long as you can get moving? So if I got moving on snow in my 2wd car, even slowly and didnt adjust my revs I wouldn't wheel spin even on a hill. That is what I was wanting to know, thanks.

I did manage to get the A6 out (got out early before others tried and wheel spun the snow into a skating rink), so technically I didnt get stuck .
