    Coolant Warning Light.

    Hi Folks,

I'm having a problem with my Audi Coupe 2.8E V6 i fill the coolant tank and within a day or two the warning light is flashing on the dash and i have to refill it as it is empty, recently i fitted a second hand radiator which i was told had no leaks so i'm not sure what i need. (not very good with cars) so any help will be great. Thanks Steve.

Well you either have a leak somewhere (may not be leaking underneath the car, could well be leaking in to the engine if the HG has gone) or when you refilled the rad you left a lot of air in there and its slowly working out.

Have a look under the header tank, you can get a leak where the pipe joins on there, the outlet cracks. Have a look around for brown water marks near any of the pipes, if possible park it somewhere clean and run the engine till the fan comes on an see if you can see any drips underneath. If not you may have a headgasket gone.. Is there a lot of steam coming out the exhaust?

What colour smoke? That smoke may be steam.. I don't think cats will get rid of smoke anyway.. Are you burning oil too?

You could look at the spark plugs and see if they're crusty at all indicating that you're getting water in the engine. You can also do a pressure test to see if the HG is leaking.

            Hi,

The smoke is an off white in colour i was told that it was because the cats were missing.
            Cheers

personally i would use the audi one and get the source of the leaks fitted....prestone will not make any difference to the loss of water but it could cause other problems with seals, water pump lubrication and corrosion inhibiting capability.
