Hey guys... just need a quick sanity check please:
When I bought my S2, it had what I thought were 4 identical 17 inch Avus wheels on it.
Last week I had 4 new tyres fitted and an alignment. Somewhere during this the guys mixed up the rims and then realised they weren't all the same.
When they were done, they said they had difficulty with the alignment due to one pair of wheels having a different offset to the other pair.
Then the other day, I hit that pothole. I took the wheel to show Rob (GT500) and when we tried to order a new one, we found out that the one we had was a replica.
The measurements of the damaged one are:
17.5J x 17 ET 35
...and I'm assuming that the one on the other side is the same.
Now today I came to try and figure out what's up with the rear ones. A quick look and they seem to be slightly different inside. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any info on size/offset/part no./anything on them, except "Made in Germany".
Since the same size tyre is fitted and the sidewall angle looks exactly the same, I'm assuming that the rear, like the front, is 17.5J.
This would yeild that just the offset is different. I was trying to measure that by hand, but it was proving difficult with wheel still on car and I don't have a trolley jack handy right now - I'll try and get one at the weekend.
After appealing on the forum I've been offered a pair of good condition Avus reps from dm80 on here. They're ET42 and he's had them on his Coupe without spacers.
Obviously this is 7mm less inner clearance - but I presume this will be fine? I mean, they obviously were on his...?
Now I'm also wondering, if I fit those to the front, what do I do about the rears? Without knowing what offset they are... I dunno, I guess I don't need to, but... meh. Should I just leave them?
What's the most offset you can put on an S2 with a 7.5J before it starts to interfere, anyway?
Finally - when we had all the wheel bolts out last weekend after removing all 4 wheels, we found that several of the bolts were shorter and some were longer bolts that had been cut down. Yet the longer ones went in fine and seemed to be the ones that were actually the correct length.
Any ideas why this would be done?
