Help me choose the right engine for my porsche 20vt conversion

    Hi all

I am building a Porsche 924 turbo hybrid with audi i5 power plant. I need your help choosing wich engine, to put in.
My plan is to make a list with all available engines from the audi i5 range. When the list is complete, I will make some kind of poster to put on your garage wall.

    The post must contain:

Engine code ex. AAN, ABY, 7a, etc.
    HP
    torque (nm)
from wich cars it was available
    Spec - 10v, 20v, 25v, N/A, Turbo etc.

And finally photo of the stock motor.

If you want a proper turbocharged I5 swap, then there's only three choices:
      AAN, ABY, ADU.
The engines themselves do not differ that much. I think it will be cheapest to take an AAN engine and then modify it to whatever power level you desire...
They will all do 400hp and 600nm on stock internals.

Do they have the same stock power output?
My concern matters the danish mot rules, and how the IM is positioned.

I think for your project the AAN engine will suit best as the Inlet manifold throttle points towards the front right of the engine (when looking at the engine from the front of the car) where as the ADU and ABY inlet manifold point to the left and at the very rear of the engine which will be awkward in the porsche engine compartment.
Could someone post engine compartment pictures of the ADU/ABY and the AAN engines??

This is a stock ABY engine layout in an S2, pretty much identical to ADU/RS2

This is stock AAN in an S4/S6

Have a look through this thread to see other variations with the use of aftermarket manifolds etc

ADU is 315 PS stock, AAN and ABY are 230 PS stock.
But there is not really much difference between AAN/АBY/ADU. ADU is like factory tuned ABY. Intercooler, exhaust cam, turbo, downpipe, exhaust, injectors - however, all of them are fairly marginal and visually the engines look the same.
Obviously there are some more little differences, but if you want to tune the engine later, there is no point on paying lots of $$$ for the ADU engine.

Of course, if you are not allowed to tune the engine (but can they really tell at MOT that you should not be running a certain turbo? or injectors?), then the ADU engine with ancilliaries is good for 370 PS with a chiptune.

                Aan

I think you are right about AAN being the best choice as the IM points the right way.

As you can see from the pic above (cheers twenty valve) the throttle is at the very rear of the engine. This is due to the location of the main rad in the ADU/ABY. I imagine that your engine bay in the Porsche will have the rad at the front of the car in the conventional location, this is the same as the layout in a URS4 AAN engine bay this allows the throttle to be located on the right of the engine roughly where the radiator is in the pic above, this is why i think that the AAN may suit your porsche better.
Anyone got a pic of an AAN engine bay?

As PRJ has said, the I5Ts are all essentially the same block and head, same rods, pistons, cranks and so on. Later AAN/ABY use the same shells as ADU and ADU parts are mostly listed as replacements now.

So really, it doesn't matter what code you get as its only the bolt on parts you would want to change such as IM.

Non turbo I5s have the same block and head, crank etc too, but they require work to make the same as the I5T such as different valves, water manifold machining in the head and so on.

Your best bet is a AAN as they are cheaper usually. That said, there is no reason why you couldn't get an ABY/ADU or even 3B and fit the AAN inlet manifold or even a Wagner reverse IM.

The AAN has some extra brackets on the front, as it uses a viscus type fan in the S4/6 where the S2s use an electric one, but again, these can be swapped about between codes.

Water systems are the same amongst all models really, they have a waterpump driven by the timing belt, and an Aux electric pump for turbo cooling after the engine is stopped.

                        Powers:
                        3B 220 - S2 20v (distributer)
                        ABY 230 - S2 20v (COP)
                        ADU 315 - RS2 20v (COP)
                        AAN 230 - S4/6 20v (COP)
