Hi, I was doing a bit of work on the car the other day and when i fitted the battery back up it hardly any power left in it so i left it overnight to see if it would charge itself up but now i have no power what so ever. When i did have some power in it i tried to turn the key and just got a whirring/ticking noise. Could it be the alternator or the dist cap. Any help or info would be great.
How long since the battery was properly charged? I would take the battery out and put it on a charger over night, then disconnect the charger and measure the voltage, then leave it for a couple of hours and measure it again, it should still be around 13V, if not you need a new battery.
Ticking noise is either relays of the starter solenoid, basically not enough current for them to run so they switch on/off rapidly. As above disconnect from the car and let it charge over night.

As has been said battery needs charging, or run jump leads to it while fitted in the car from another car. check to see what voltage you are getting on the positive lead. If you can take it for a 15-20 mile drive with nothing switched on that will charge the battery (do 60mph and keep it in 4 or 5 depending 5 or 6 speed box). Was your battery light on the dash on? If so regulator gone.

A battery will *never* charge itself up all by itself.
Sorry.
