I have had a shock today upon my return - there is a Green S2 Avant on my drive! It appears that my wife decided it should stay and turned the breaker away. I wasn't expecting to see when I got back and to be honest that suited me just fine. I will sit on it for a few weeks before deciding a course of action, either way replacement of the cam sensor will require a cambelt change (it is due one) I will need to gather tools and parts (aircon model) etc which again doesn't excite me. The car is by no means staying trust me as it still requires a major amount of time and effort to sort out.

Fortunately or unfortunately my wife doesn't alway allow me to wear the trousers in my house so I have to throw the dice one last time.
You might leave the S2 fold every so often - but you'll always come back!

        Changing the G40 cam sensor

I would call finding a green S2 avant still on your drive excellently good news. Especially since it is an avant. (I am partial to them)

As for having to do the cambelt in order to replace the G40 cam position sender, that is not true. It can be done quite easily without changing the cam belt, following this procedure (slightly different for an ABY):

        Hang in there Simon.

                    So you see.
Even if presented at first with what seems like insurmountable obstacles, it is possible to succeed with a little help.

Enjoy your car, and don't give up.

Simon, really pleased my cam position sensor got you going - you'll also understand why I can only lend it to you as we all need to carry a spare

I know when mine failed years ago it was frustating because I wasn't aware of the forum to help and my local Audi Dealers had no idea either. I ended up buying a new one at a cost of around £100 as an act of faith based only on the similarity to a problem I'd had with a Citroen BX distributor years before and the conviction that the Motronic ECU never fails!

I would like to thank all on the forum for their help especially John for the use of his sensor. Without the help I would have gotten rid of the car and left the Audi family very disillusioned!

                            Thank again to all.
