S2 avant

Hi all,

Ive been offered an L reg S2 avant which has been parked up outside for many years and unused.
I tried starting the car yesterday but wouldnt start,it turns over and builds up a decent amount of oil pressure.
I cant hear a fuel pump buzzing away so maybe its something to do with this.
Its on 166,000 miles,black leather recaro trim in good nick,has old print outs from 7 or 8 years ago of nearly 350bhp
He wants a £1000 for it which doesnt seem alot of money but was just wondering if im likely to break it and get the grand back if all else fails.
He promised me it run less than 2 years ago when he moved it.
Cant remember the whole reg number but starts with L606 and could be GHV as the last 3 but cant remember.
Maybe someone on here knows the car from years ago.
Its dark blue,nearly black and the owner tells me it belonged to somebody who had some sort of race car team
Just seeing if anyone thinks its worth a gamble or do i leave it where it sits

Dont break it mate, this sounds prime for a project for yourself!! 350 bhp is a canny bit to!! If you dont want it il take it?

If you cant fix it - please dont break an otherwise complete car... they are getting very rare these days.

Take some time here to seek out the various 'no start' threads - there is invariably a stupid / simple electrical fault that stops it firing up. Top candidates -

1 - Immobiliser... often the source of many woes due to shoddy aftermarket installation - could be wired into ECU feed, fuel pump etc

2 - Weak or absent G4 or G28 signals from crankshaft

3 - Weak or absent G40 signal from camshaft - can also be caused if timing belt is well off alignment

4 - Faulty fuel pump relay... I bet my left nut that the 'fuel pump running' noise you describe is actually the afterrun water pump which is tickled for a few seconds after turning on the key. These cars do NOT prime the system with fuel... they only pump when the ECU says that the engine is rotating fast enough

5 - How long has this thing sat... could the fuel be really bad ?

6 - Check all fuses and earth straps too

7 - Pull codes and run some ECU output tests... that will sanity check the ECU can turn injectors on/off for example

8 - Someone that knows what to look for, and equipped with the right tools, should be able to root cause it in a couple of hours unless it something really bizarre

Get some fresh fuel in and try again would be my first thought

I can assure you that if you cant get it running then you will definately either be able to sell it whole on here for more or you would make your money back easily in parts (the recaro interior is worth a pretty penny alone). And if its running 350bhp then i would say it has had thousands spent on the engine also...

To reiterate the post above.... Please, please, buy it and try to get it running, too many of these cars are being broken for parts, we should be able to give you good advice (like above) to help you get it running.

Oh, and one thing....... we like pictures...........

The reg is L606 GHV if anybody used to own it or knew of the car

Id say try fuel first like someone suggested. I remember a mate had a MK1 GTI off the road for a few years, did an engine rebuild etc and it wouldnt start. Tried alsorts, then got some fuel in a jar when checking fuel pressure. Poured a little on the floor tried to light it - nothing. Drained the tank, put 10 litres of fresh fuel in and it started first turn

Yeah - if it has sat for 4-5 years then the fuel will be useless... drain and refresh... try again - you might be really lucky !

Hi gents,

I collected it this evening and im in too minds what to do with it as it needs a fair bit of work.

Ive taken a couple pictures but am rubbish with computers so dont know how to put them on but i have learn how to send an email with a picture if somebody would be kind enough to put them up for me.

As for the claimed decent bhp,in my opinion it looks totally standard, the print out thats with it isnt actually a print out,just a printed off thing of which bhp it could gain with certain mods.

Going to have a better look at the car tomorrow and see if its too much work for me or not.

I will take some more detailed pictures if anybody is interested in the complete car or maybe breaking.

What i can say about it is it has Koni front and rear dampers plus H&R springs as ive just found an invoice for these plus it says on another bit of paper work saying it has a s2 Nothelle N300 conversion what ever that maybe
