Someone I knew a few years ago ok a long time ago had this problem in his TD Clio and it turned out to be interference through the stereo, even when it was muted it came through the speaker. A long shot but you never know?
Just some finishing touches to do now

The solid lines are almost always ok and will pretty much last forever, its just the rubber stuff with the cloth braiding that perishes, often you get leaks at the back of the IM where 3 or 4 small hoses are connected. They leak where they're clamped to the nipples on the IM usually. There's one which goes from there to the FPR which can leak and of course the small bore one to the DV.

There's a vac schematic here on S2Central (thanks to Paul!)

Also worth checking the MAF hose hasn't rubbed through on the back of the headlight cowling, just above where that plastic elbow goes off down to the DV. The plastic elbow doesn't get boost pressure only suction but I bet it could whistle if the leak was the right shape and size!

I've had something similar but again the frequency goes up and down with the engine revs. With a whistle caused by a leak it stays more constant pitch and appears at a certain boost level and gets louder.

You might want to check your muffler.

Thanks Lee. I got well accustomed to the radio squeal as I had major issues when I used to have an old beetle. I fitted a massive stereo inside it and had the buzz from that. Its down to earths for the radio and amps etc. Sorted that eventually but its a different buzz to the one I am getting.

Newsh - Glad to hear the solid lines should be ok. After looking closer into them all, now I am eventually getting the idea of where all the small vac hoses are I think most of them have been changed by the previous owner so its just my luck it will be either the joins or one of the remaining old hoses which I bet were left as they are a PITA to get to. I did find one suspect hose that is getting changed this weekend but it wasnt split or anything. Oh well. Must keep trying. Then will move onto the Water leak from the oil cooler and then hopefully fix some electrics and then the central locking and rear passenger window that doesnt work and then........ Oh and hopefully the car is going for paint work in August too! Oh and at some point I must change that leaky diff seal as I already have the replacement seal at home too.

Oh the joys of old cars!
