Seems to be big price differences with this bodyshop work.I rang audi about my coupe when a taxi driver opened his door on my rear quarter they don't do the paint themselves they use car cosmetics (in Manchester at least) very good quality job but cost the taxi driver £900 will post some pics of how minor it was when I get home.
£1000 for most of car except roof and bumpers
£900 for some scratches
Fair people and greedy people, but lifes like that aint it.

Thanks to all who have given their input.
I'm determined not to pay silly money.
I know it's a skilled job, and to get quality work you have to pay, it's just that some folk get a bit carried away with their pricing, and I'm not going to get shafted.

i notice no one has mentioned specifics here though. rs 2315 you mention fair and greedy but then no one wants to pay for anything in life
, i am not having a go here at anyone, but ian might have had a perfect ripple free car that wanted literally a few stop chips skimmed and a nice clean blow over, would you charge the same if numerous hours were needed to be spent on straightening dings and dents here and there and then spraying the affected areas?
you get what you pay for BUT some people are rip off merchants charging silly figures and using the shittest cheapest paint (yes there is a difference).
as a quick question i wonder how many people would roughly know how much 5litre's of a premium lacquer is? (not including the list of other things needed)Comment

totally agree and i would recommend a 5-10 minute chat about your car with the person doing the job (harder if a larger garage is being used) you will soon know if there out for a massive money hoard or if they are proud of there jobs and what they want to achieve

I can't comment on work done to other forum members cars and the finish of workmanship.
You have to get up close to a car to see the real story.
An example is my RS2, I posted some pics a few months back on the forum and though I say it my self she looked pretty tasty.
But if you were to get in close you would notice exterior trim missing small areas of rust round front arches and so on.
Some of the work to be done right like the arches is time consuming, some of it like respraying small trim pieces would not take as long.
Laquer price £120.00
Big shot in the dark!!

5litre's of lacquer is around £130 trade dependent on what brand and the amount your buying (i work for a large bodyshop and we used to spend around 18k a month
which natrually got us a large discount) We use Sikkens Superior lacquer and although its good its very expensive at £390 for 5litres retail NOT including hardener or thinners! just to give you a small insight into cost
Personal recommendations are worth their weight in gold if you ask me

IMHO unless you find someone who takes pride in what they do it doesn't matter what it costs.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

You get what you pay for from an independant. From a stealer - you pay a lot and get a **** job. End of!Comment

did you mean because i said it was around £130 for some lacquer and kulster said a grand for paint materials? If so there is a huge difference between a a can of lacquer and all the materials needed for a re-spray.
i totally agree with you about pride in your work though and that's why i think recommendations go so far as usually they are about people that take time and effort to ensure a job is done correctly and to the customers satisfaction.

at your price rate mate, you'd put 35litres of paint on a car for your £1000!
But yeah I know there's more to it than that.. my point was that its not exactly transparent
Actually I'm sure a lot of people would be really interested to see a rough breakdown of materials costs to do a full body paint using good quality gear

For a bare shell respray maybe, otherwise thats a ridiculous cost. I know some very good painters and all of them can lay it on "ripple free", its more down to what needs doing regarding prepwork that accounts for the time and then obviously cost.
To paint my Escort inside and out and underneath was 2k then another £1500 for the dipping process. That was a bare shell though but then I doubt you will find anyone wanting a complete S2 stripping down to nothing and painting completely so I can't honestly see how anyone can justify charging 5k for a paint job unless the car had lived at the bottom of the ocean for a decade.
As for Dimitri's comment the Audi dealers round here did have their own paintshops ( Vindis Audi ) they have now been taken over by Gladwins, its one of their old workshops managers who has setup round my way along with another ex vindis painter and will be painting mine, the pair of them are very good and from what I've seen so far can repair cars and lay paint on as well as you would expect any professional to do.Comment
