    How to - Brake Bomb

    Hi guys

My bomb seems ok but is weeping a fair bit so fluid is going everywhere over a period of time. Any tips for a cure or am I best to change it? I have a spare decent one (apparantly) sitting in the garage for when I needed it.

Is there a guide on how to change the bomb? I have searched but cant find anything just a few things like pump the peddle first etc.

Also is it a real PITA to do?

Think it could be an xmas break job as its not terrible atm.

    Thanks
    Chris

It's a fairly simple procedure, just a little messy.
    • With the engine off, pump the pedal until it goes hard - this empties the bomb of fluid
    • Remove the low pressure line (hose clamp) from the bomb and drain the mineral oil into a container
    • Remove the high pressure line (brake union) and cover to prevent too much fluid loss - leave the brak / clutch reservoir cap on to maintain a seal
    • Remove the bomb assy from the car (a few bolts hold on the bracket
    • Swap the bomb over and then re-attach to the car
    • Attach the lines
    • Fill up the PAS reservoir with correct LHM mineral oil
    • Run the car until the brakes work correctly - the pedal should be smooth
    • Turn the steering from lock to lock to pull fluid through the PAS system
    • Turn the car off and top up brake and mineral oil fluids
    • Check the bomb is operating correctly using the pump method
    • Check level and fill to a known point
    • Re-check level after a few days to check for leakage

    ... or something like that

I'm sure someone will shout if I've got anything wrong

There is a guide, or certainly pictures to help you. Have you tried a search?

You might want to put the car on axle stands, to give good sight from underneath but I can't remember it being too much of a job from the engine bay. Usual thing, take your time and make sure that have a few cups of tea at various stages...

Haha, was going to put it on the ramps, the home workers version where you can just get under the car haha.

I thought a few cups of Tea was standard equipment for car work? Its like an extension of the tool box I thought?

Car ramps will definitely help and you will struggle from above the car. Bumper may have to come off to get on the ramps, unless you can create a gentle slope with a plank of wood or something similar. It's not a bad job unless you get the fluid all over you!

Cheers steve. I already have some extended slopes for the ramps for such occasions thanks so no bumper removal. Mind you that's not hard anyway so will see what happens. Thanks bud

in an aby probably possible from the top...3b with oem fan, definately in from under the car from memory, access from there is not too bad if you have it up on axle stands to a reasonable height to give some elbow room

Cool cheers guys. All I gotta do now is dig it out and get on with it! This weekend is a no no due to fitting a new engine to my brothers van but then the brakes are getting attacked!

Will be one job off the list which consists of cam belt, rear diff seals and a core plug water leak and fit Samco water hoses. What a list hey! All being done over next few months then it's in for paint and fitting new wheels. Phew!

Hi Chris, hope your keeping well. My bomb was leaking from the top pressure hose a while ago, the bomb was fine though, so i just got new cooper washers from the main stealers and changed those and it fixed it. Just make sure you pump that pedal up dude, till its rock hard otherwise you may be covered in alot of pressured oil, lol.
                        Take it easy mate

Long time no hear gav. Will check the washers as I think it could be leaking from there so maybe worth a try. A good dose of cleaner will help identify it's origin. I know all about the peddle pumping haha.

How's the pond? Fitted the new turbo to the car yet?

                            Hey guys

I have found my leak is the copper washers for the power steering circuit. The two that have the hose that run to the top of the bomb. Question is, if I undo that host at either end (Runs power steering pump to bomb???) will I have to bleed the brakes too or just the power steering system?

                            Thanks in advance.
