I have binned at least 5 tailgates you could have had for free, even with the Quattro script in the heating element.

PM Detroitpiston on here he is breaking a coupe and may donate one to you for a drink

        Cheers lads.

As it stands it's in the hands of autoglass and my insurers. I'll hear back tomorrow about the availability of the glass.

If it's bad news then I see there's a few on ebay available and willing to post.

Hopefully they will write it off, pay you £1500, then you can buy it back for say £150 and pay another £150 for a tail gate and paint job. By the end of it you should be at least a grand better off then before.

boooooo. Did the engine shift when you were driving along? Must have **** yourself. I put my ABY right at the back of my van when i picked it up and had mad understeer all the way home with the weight behind the wheels.

This is where an avant comes into play. Here is someone who looks vaguely like me, with his "new" spare AAN, loaded in the back of his 98 C4 A6 avant. AAN is on sheet of 3/4" (19 mm) plywood (to prevent breaking the 3rd seat cover, etc) and is tied down with four rachet straps to the four chrome factory "D" rings that are bolted to the body. *He* had to drive around for a few days like that because he couldn't get the flywheel off - which was necessary to get the engine onto an engine stand. Eventually got it off (needed an air impact gun), mounted the engine to the stand and extracted it from the hatch all alone.

That looks like the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a early 'quattro' script rear hatch to me.

It reminds me of when I had an ARV in the boot of my 3B. I forgot it was there, and got a little over enthusiastic hanging the back out through a series of twisties, when I heard a massive bang in the back, and I thought I'd hit something.
I looked around the back of the car, then realised the 'box was in the boot. I was lucky it didn't smash up more boot trim than it did.

Engine is now out and in my garage.

                        Further lessons learned:

                        - Never build a cheap engine crane without instructions again.
                        - Never carry an engine in a coupe boot. Even less fun getting it out than getting it in! I'll be looking for some second hand inner trim pieces.....

It'd be in black, and it's the inner lower trim, kinda on the opposite side of the number plate, if you know what I mean. I can find a part number if required.

Im sure most of the trim was black in mine with navy carpet. Either picture or part number and I'll have a look.
