All these seems to be like we have had for years. Most simpple it's to rip out the HID's for MOT. Here we need to have xenon approval mark on the headlight glass(impossible to get HID's legal on normal halogen lights). Of couse we need to have the washer and adjustment also...

Agree with above, i always remove the HIDs before the test and aim the beam to the ground so they dont have anything to complain about.

Only recent change is all cars over 10 years old have to be tested yearly now. Typically that means i end up bolting the cats back in the night before, and it always rains too

How does this stand for not having the CAT there on a car that is 91 plate or older, as I have heard if it was there they would expect to see it even if it doesnt affect ommisions test due to age?

As far as i was told an mot tester can not remove/undo any fixed item on a car? so how do they intend to check the ecu, screw shut any lid/cover over any diag port, sorted. Same with "excessive corrosion on pipe work, put a plate over any exposed pipe work. I perfectly understand the "safty" stuff, brakes, tyres, suspension joints etc but only to the point of is it dangerous. but seriously rear door operation, and using the term "excessive" one mans excessive is another mans bit rusty.
The british goverment (labour, lib dem or tory) doesn't realise it is slowly backing itself into a corner with the general population, what with excessive tax on booze and fags, petrol and car tax higher and higher income tax brackets, and then cutting any sort of help for those of us who work but need a little help. sorry

On a pre 91 car if theres no obvious decat pipe in place then it may never have had one from new for all the tester knows, or an obvious decat may just be dismissed as its pre91.*

How many testers out there are familar with the under sides of an S2, if it really is a problem then fit any old cat to it, just be sure to break up and remove its innards first*They wont know

Over here any car 94 or newer has to have a catalytic converter by law regardless of emissions. I run without them in the CQ (91) and S4 (93) without issue but have to fit them into the S2 (94) for the test even though it would probably pass the emissions part of the test without them.

Am i the only one thinks the MOT is a great idea?
Ok i hate the stress of it, and the cost!
The likes of us folk on here that are enthusiasts and keep our cars as good as we can!
My own cars have all been up on a ramp and checked out atleast twice a year to make sure all is as it should be, so it is unusual that i get a nasty surprise at MOT time anyway.

                    BUT...........

There are also the chav's who make unsafe modifacations/repairs and are driving around endangering themselves and other road users.
Then there are the likes of others who do not properly maintain their cars......
I personally know plenty that drive about with things knocking about under their cars and arent to bothered!

Not that long ago my mothers car failed for having a fair amount of rot in one of the rear inner arches all the way up to the top of the suspension mount.
Seeing as her maintainece is most politely described as lazy, i was glad of the MOT tester finding it, and getting that unsafe car off the road!

apparently if you fail the new rules it will only result in an advisory until late spring - so get your cars tested before then and you'll be ok.

Ok where does that leave those of us with 1986 cars with 20Vt engines. Please don't tell me I have to go back to a lowly KV.
And do cats in place apply to 1996 diesels ??? Since removing mine it runs far better with a lot less smoke. All seems bonkers...
