The joys of old quattro ownership..

Had a bit of driving to do this evening so i filled the S4 with fuel, all €120 of the stuff, and set off on my journey. 40miles down the road the fuel pump died leaving me stranded on the side of the road for an hour waiting for my father to turn up with the S2 to tow the S4 all the way home again. Which it did exceptionally well i might add.

So tomorrow morning i have the joyful task of somehow draining 20-30 liters of perfectly good fuel out (with no working fuel pump) in order to get at said f*****g fuel pump.

Dont you just love these old cars

Sorry to hear about that, breaking down sucks ****. I always worry about any long distance trips in the s2 knowing alot of the parts that keep it running are still the originals and are waiting for me to go on some big road trip so they can give up. Thinking about breakdown cover as i just rely on a mate or member of family with a tow rope at the moment

Is it the pump itself at fault?

Cant you empty the tank using the new one if so?

      Mcandmar,

Feel for you, looked at the title and thought it would be all good.

I keep a tow rope in the boot at all times for this very reason. although every time i have used it I have been towing a friends car that has been stuck in the snow.

You can do it with the fuel in the tank, it will be cold though, don't ask me how I know..

Same happened to me this summer, i had 3/4 full tank when it happened... Fortunately it died in the parking lot, just before I started heading out of town.
As a temp solution I swapped in fuel pump from 2.8 V6, I didn't bother pumping the fuel out as it took only few minutes of fiddling to swap the pumps.

Well that was fun. Bentley manual says to have less than 3/4 tank of fuel before removing cover so i drained two petrol cans of fuel out with a hose and air line stuck in the filler cap. You weren't kidding about it being cold newsh, i felt like that guy in the Heineken add with his hand in an ice bucket fishing for a beer. Access is a little awkward too being a saloon, not much room under the parcel shelf to work.

Amazingly it looks like the original pump, no sign anybody has ever been in there. Part number is 8A0 906 091A which ETKA lists as 91-92 100 Quattro, all cars since are listed with a G part number so its an old pump. Its also a Bosch unit and not VDO like the S2's, whats even more incredible is the car has just over 250k miles on it, in my experience the VDO pumps die at @130k miles.

Ordered a replacement from GSF for €50+vat, no idea of what make it is but will find out on friday.

Be careful with those cheap pumps... they don't hold pressure on a chipped car.
If it's a VDO or Bosch unit you're fine though.

But if it's one of those italian weird names, don't fit it.

I am a little concerned about that as GSF weren't able to tell me what make it is. Audi parts system lists them ~150 quid so that would be the guts of €200 from my local stealer. Figured it was worth the gamble. I would be interested to know if anybody else has sourced one from GSF, and what they got.

I would just buy a HRC pump off of ebay

If it's the original pump it might work, though on Stage 2 1.8T cars usually the original pump is changed out.
And stage 2 on those cars is 300bhp.

Have you measured fuel pressure or AFR at WOT?
It'll run "fine" at 14 AFR also, it'll just melt your pistons in the process eventually.
