hey guys, looking to get some tyres for my wheels at long last. I have seen some tyres on ebay.... Michelin retreads.... Are they going to be safe on the car? Havent got loads to spend hence looking at part worns or retreads.
Are retreads ok?

NO!
Wouldn't fit retreads to the missus's Ka!
A retread just uses the carcass, the rest of the tyre is going to be some chinese crap.
Best off saving up for at least some midrange tyres for a 2 ton, c.300bhp, 150mph car, as I'm sure that will be a lot cheaper than your excess or even worse.Cheers'en, AndyC

Fair enough answer for me there... No retreads for me then!
I wasnt sure about the idea of them and didnt realise they were made from carcases... is it a similar thing to remoulds then?Comment

Just get good quality part worns.
New summer tires are about 8mm thread depth, you can pretty often pick up 6mm's for a fraction of the cost.
That's what I do for my Omega.Comment

Yes, that was the other route I was looking into seeing as I have got to get 2 sets of tyres in the next month and my wages wont allow for new sets and living

Modern retreads arent the same old crap as they used to be, its becoming more common place in europe, there are proper safety regs for retreads now, and the carbon footprint of a retread is better (recycling) Ive used retread winter tyres before and they were excellent! The method of manufacture is identical to a new tyre, Andy is right they do use the base carcass of an old tyre, and cast the tread around it. But new tyres are made this way (just with a new carcass) providing you get a retread with a high load + speed rating, that is properly approved, the tyre should be fine!
Personally i wouldnt buy them for a performance car on principle, but they'd be fine for the work hack/runabout!Black B3 1990 CQ 2.3E converted to ABY & 6spd. (301bhp) - Now Sold

Get part worns. You can buy a premium performance tyre for a fraction of the new cost, a much better option than new ditchfinders or retreads. A while back I bought 2 x 245/35 18 Conti SC3s with 7mm tread for £30 each!Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

I think thats wise, even though they should be safe, i personally wouldnt like the idea of retreads on my s2.
I got part worns last time, i got 4 Eagle F1's with 7mm for £150, and still going strong!
