I know a lot of the newer defenders have the transit lump in it, which is fine. But i'd go for a TD5, a chipped one drives like a car. (I had a chipped Disco II TD5 and it flew)
As standard with landies, look out for rot on the chassis and the bulkhead and worn suspension (listen for clunking and excessive transmission slack). My old 90 SW (1999) was built so it had galavanised everything and a WOLF version of the 300 TDI. Unfortunately alot of that stuff wont apply to newer ones. Im afraid thats as far as my newer landie knowledge extends im afraid.

List what you want to use it for and I will advise what to go for.

You may be better off with a rebuilt old Defender compared to 2009 TDci

For a start 2006+ is in the higher road tax bracket £400

Tinworm is the biggest killer. All the chassis rot before they leave the forcourt. Bulkheads also rot baddly.

            Engine list in defenders are.
            2500cc Petrol
            2500cc NA Diesel
            2500cc Turbo Diesel
            2500cc 200TDi
            2500cc 300TDi
            2500cc TD5 (5 Pot)
            2.4 TDci
            2.2 TDci
            3.5 V8 Carb
            4.6 V8 Efi

in fact probably easier to give me a call at work tomorrow and I can give you a few pointers.

Well the picture you have posted is a Defender 90. The 90 Denotes that it is a short wheel base but is actully 93", longer verions are known as a 110, longer than this is known as 127" or 130"

The thing with the Defender is that they look virtually the same from 1983 to present day.
And a 1983 one can be made to look like a 2012 one with a few subtle changes and a nice paint job.

I bought this 1990 127" in February in 1000's of pieces in boxes, It was built and on the road for 1st March.

Generally x army stuff is very low milage and has had an easy life but generally cost more than civilian stuff to purchase.
