    Insurance Valuation Nightmare

Can anyone help with regards to proving the value of their car to insurance when there are so few for sale at any one time?

My 1995 ABY Coupe was reversed into by a transit van in June and since then I'm no further forward as far as repairing it goes. I reported it to my insurance (Admiral) on the day who tried to contact the third party's insurer, Chartis, who apparently don't take calls and can only be contacted in writing.

To try and get my car fixed and returned quicker i decided to go through my own insurance who would then claim back from the other side. The first issue was than living where I do on an island off the isle of skye they didnt have any approved repairers in my area so i was told to find a garage that I trusted to do the work, which I did and I left the car there to be assessed and picked up a hire car (1.8 Insignia) provided by my legal cover.

The quote came back from the garage for £2600 for the repair which the insurance said made the car a total loss as their guide said it was valued at £2700. Obviously I argued this and sent them pictures of my car and adverts for 2 cars of similar age and spec going for £5500.

This seemed to be accepted as valid proof as the next problem was that they considered the quote to be too high ad offered me £1500 cash in lieu to sort it myself which I turned down, I was then offered £2400 which again I turned down as although the garages estimate was £2600 they were unsure if the cost could rise due to a previous repair having been damaged in the accident.

The insurance in their wisdom decided that they had to get an independent assessor out to review the claim who came back to them saying the estimate was correct but the car was only worth £2700 based on the same bloody guide the insurance used and that the car should be written off! I questioned this again so the insurance went back to the independent assessor to ask them to review the valuation.

They then googled "Audi S2's for sale", found the 5 that are currently for sale online, took my car as being at the bottom end of that spectrum (based entirely on the previous repair that had cracked in the accident) and valued it at £3400 the same as a 1991 3B. The independent assessors report even says " We have carried out searches on the internet on Gumtree, Autotrader and Pistonheads" giving the sum total of their research.

My insurance now won't repair the car and are using this ludicrous report as "expert advice" on the matter.

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of problem? All im after is getting my car repaired and this has dragged on for nearly 8 weeks without any sign of coming to a satisfactory conclusion. I've also been told today that my hire car is being taken off me leaving me without transport.

Sounds like a nightmare.. How independent is their 'independent assesor' that's what I'd be asking... Maybe you can take it to the financial ombudsman service?

I don't think independence is the problem so much as incompetence, they simply took the values of the 5 cars they saw as being a representative value of all S2's

I'm not sure if this is still the case but I thought that they had an obligation to pay out the cost it would take to replace the car like-for-like, or provide a like-for-like replacement. If that is the case, tell them to find you a replacement car with the same spec which is never going to happen.

Don't think that's valid any more...

I would go back and take their offer of £2400.00 and find another firm to do the repairs... Their quote is based on the fact that it's an Insurance company quote and if you shop around I'm sure you'll find someone just as good if not better who would do it for much less... Especially if it's cash in hand...

Just make sure they don't want to "Cat C" in on the docs...

Put the detail aside for a second.
You have paid your insurer for compressive insurance and they won't repair/replace the car?

Can anybody tell me another industry where you are pre-paid for a product then not deliver it?

                INSURANCE=THIEVES

I hate them the way the go about everything borders on corruption in my eyes.

I've considered it and it may be possible to get it done within these margins but what I object to is that it may end up costing more than that and it isn't really a risk I should have to take. The issue really boils down to the valuation which as far as I can see is based on a basic internet search and has no relation to the age, spec or condition of my car

So what valuation would "you" put on it???

What's the spec, mileage etc... Just out of interest?

Somewhere about £5500, here it is on the for sale thread from when i bought it two years ago

Since I bought it i've put 10k on it and its now at 112k, I've put it off the road each winter and its had oil changed twice in that time plus the timing belt, water pump and various other parts as and when they were required. Mechanically and cosmetically its in very good condition, before I put it away last winter I put it into a body shop to respray some minor scratches and to colour code the rear bumper (the front had already been done) I also went wax oiled any parts off the chassis that were getting tatty and there's no sign of rust anywhere on the body. I just find the offer of £3400 is just a bit insulting maybe I'm being a bit precious about it but I took a long time finding a car with this spec and condition and I'm a pretty sure I wouldn't get another one for that money

I know exactly how you feel swinton did the same with my Ducati 888 they are like hens teeth and I found one at a local dealer for 8k they still argued mine was worth 3k I just stood my ground printed as many ad`s as possible and battered them into a better offer. got the cash and fixed it myself

Similar to mine bar all the mods, brakes, re-map, suspension, lights etc. I'm not after a payout tho all I'm after from them is to repair the car but they wont even give me a threshold value above which the car would be repairable

Understood! But the game is to prove their valuation is not representative. So the more examples you can find the better!
In fact I would ask them for the details of the examples they have used for the valuation and then discount any that are not of the same year. That should increase it somewhat if they are using older, less valuable examples.
I guess it is a war of attrition. Counter their arguments with facts.
