Can anyone help with regards to proving the value of their car to insurance when there are so few for sale at any one time?
My 1995 ABY Coupe was reversed into by a transit van in June and since then I'm no further forward as far as repairing it goes. I reported it to my insurance (Admiral) on the day who tried to contact the third party's insurer, Chartis, who apparently don't take calls and can only be contacted in writing.
To try and get my car fixed and returned quicker i decided to go through my own insurance who would then claim back from the other side. The first issue was than living where I do on an island off the isle of skye they didnt have any approved repairers in my area so i was told to find a garage that I trusted to do the work, which I did and I left the car there to be assessed and picked up a hire car (1.8 Insignia) provided by my legal cover.
The quote came back from the garage for £2600 for the repair which the insurance said made the car a total loss as their guide said it was valued at £2700. Obviously I argued this and sent them pictures of my car and adverts for 2 cars of similar age and spec going for £5500.
This seemed to be accepted as valid proof as the next problem was that they considered the quote to be too high ad offered me £1500 cash in lieu to sort it myself which I turned down, I was then offered £2400 which again I turned down as although the garages estimate was £2600 they were unsure if the cost could rise due to a previous repair having been damaged in the accident.
The insurance in their wisdom decided that they had to get an independent assessor out to review the claim who came back to them saying the estimate was correct but the car was only worth £2700 based on the same bloody guide the insurance used and that the car should be written off! I questioned this again so the insurance went back to the independent assessor to ask them to review the valuation.
They then googled "Audi S2's for sale", found the 5 that are currently for sale online, took my car as being at the bottom end of that spectrum (based entirely on the previous repair that had cracked in the accident) and valued it at £3400 the same as a 1991 3B. The independent assessors report even says " We have carried out searches on the internet on Gumtree, Autotrader and Pistonheads" giving the sum total of their research.
My insurance now won't repair the car and are using this ludicrous report as "expert advice" on the matter.
Does anyone have any experience of this kind of problem? All im after is getting my car repaired and this has dragged on for nearly 8 weeks without any sign of coming to a satisfactory conclusion. I've also been told today that my hire car is being taken off me leaving me without transport.
