could try fitting it back in and run a jump lead from the positive of the battery straight to the starter, that'll rule out the battery cable, unless the battery itself is broke..

And one from the negative straight to the block, that'll rule out the earth cable.
Would be easy money for any autospark to do a volts drop test under load.
worth asking ross about this as he has the exact same thing when we did his engine swap on the rs2. It would work with jump leads but not off the cars wiring.
[QUOTE=Dan;687584]Works perfectly when pulled out and tested, but fails when actually given the load of turning the engine over.
I recently replaced a starter on an A8 Audi that would not work when in the car. I pulled it out & it would work perfectly on the workbench. Replaced it with a new starter & problem solved.
Try to verify the red/black wire that goes to the ignition switch. IS possible to have an issue with the ignition switch .
Use a wire ( at least 2.5mm2) between battery positive terminal and the connector of RED/black wire.

Battery wasn't in too good nick, so I've changed it to be sure anyway. So battery is now known good.
Tested starter in-situ with jump leads. Made a little bypass to jump the solenoid off... started perfectly.
Then tried it, hooked up with jump leads for the high amp, but on its own connection for the solenoid. Didn't budge.
What I need to try today is connecting its own high amp leads, then trying to jump the solenoid off that. If that works, then it's the red wire that goes to the ignition. If that fails, then we've still got a general power issue (earthing elsewhere?).
Couple of small things to note:
Remote keys for central locking now aren't working
It's coming up with the battery symbol on the dash now, while running, even though battery itself is known good.
Sound like something earthing out somewhere?

A6 3.0 TDI Quattro (aka Sonic's 'ring support/cargo vehicle )
So....high resistance somewhere between the battery positive terminal and the solenoid, maybe stripping the ignition switch would help?
Battery warning light would suggest alternator issue. Voltage at battery should be around 14v with engine running.
