    Coil conversion - help

So I'm going to start this by saying sorry...

I know there are threads on this but I'm on my phone as no Internet at home and the search function doesn't work... I'm trying to fix my misfire and am interested in the aby coil conversion to the 1.8t coil swap.

Can anyone post a link to the most relevant thread on a how to do the conversion for dummies. I'm not electrically minded. One with pics would be good if it exists.

Also why do people not refit the cover once this is done?

Thanks in advance for guidance and advice.

It's fairly easy fitting the 1.8T conversion. I got mine from EFI for around 300GBP?

Anyway, you just need to follow the guide EFI give you on paper and swap a couple of connections, it only took me and my mechanic around 30 minutes to work it all out. Never saw a guide on the forum really but it isn't as hard as it may seem

And also, never fit the cover because these coils won't withstand as much heat as the old ones (guessing because aluminium blocks for 1.8Ts won't heat up so much). The heat would kill them.

So it comes as a kit? Surely it's a loom that can be home made? Do you have the paper you could copy and send to me?

It was a DIY (that I wrote) long before it was ever available commercially. The cost of the parts and time to do it adds up to close to the commercially available plug and play kits from EFI Express and Apikol.

However, it you want to do it yourself, here is the link to the DIY instructions:

I am still running the original harness from 2005 with no issues BTW.

So how comes the self made kit costs the same as a ready to plug in kit? Just curious...

I think the first one cost me about $250 in parts. Commercially they sell for about $375 so, depending on how fast you are and the value of your time, the extra $125 might not be worth the hassle. That is my point.

So here come the questions im afraid lol.

On the existing coil cover is an earth... i take it this is made redundant in this coil swap?

The 2 connectors that go into the POS units are made redundant when using one 4 pin connector so it will look tidier and easier to join in one go?

(Looks complicated at the mo, fancy making a set and sending it to me??? Lol if only!)

Can I also just ask.... If doing this conversion in essence I could just buy the following:
                  http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kabelbaum-Sta...p2047675.l2557

and a set of 5 coils from my contacts over here. Is this correct? Then it would be plug in the above loom (rather than making one), and the coils and away I go? (just trying to get an idea here)...

I bought 2 of these, just to get the 5 connectors for the coilpacks. Then bought the other bits from a Finnish company. Handy enough to do. I prob have a spare coil connector if you want to buy a 4 cyl cable set, then make the rest yourself. I can send you a single one.

What did you buy two of bud? When you say a spare coil connector what do you mean? The whole bit from the coil to where you would join to the old POS?

it's the cheapest way to get the connectors and wire, then just chop them up and wire in the extra one.

Seems like a really good place to start cheers boss.

Dont suppose you have the address and item list you had to order the extra bits from do you? And what the parts were? Could come in useful for people in the future.

The cost of making it yourself only comes close if you buy all wiring, connectors crimps etc from audi, this way its not viable, save yourself all the arseache and buy it direct from EFI.

When i done it on mine, it worked out about £150.00 cheaper. I managed to source a TFSI coil loom from a breakers, which was spliced in/out of and the coils were from GSF car parts £18.00 each IIRC

Go by the guide that Dave URS4 has supplied and you cant go wrong, you will also need the volvo connector to reroute the POS's that costs about £3.00.

Oh yea, You need to be handy with a soldering iron, hence my brother made my kit and not me! from reading this forum, and no reports of complaints it must be still going strong!

I paid alot more for a second hand Loom than what BYRD has found! Thats a really good find, for anyone wanting to do this mod!!!!

So if I buy two of the kits that byrd has found and a volvo 4 pin connector what else do I need to make this?
