    Sounds of old

After reading andyg plym thread about S2's not sounding like 5 pots http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62558 ... it got me thinking, I don't think lorries & buses sound real anymore, they're so quiet, just auto gearbox whine & turbo whistle Those of us who are a certain age though will remember this sound

... and a lorry sounding like a lorry in this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6WidCrECIk

So true. I grew up in an era where every vehicle had its own unique sound. Mind you i was one of those "special" kids who could name any car by sound

As for lorrys, my favorite is the Foden two stoke.

You are not alone, there are a few of us "special" kids - on the way to school there was a rather awkward junction, scene of many a bump, we could identify the vehicles involved just by looking at the debris left behind

The old lorries are the best i'd rather do without aircon/fridge/cruise control and drive the old machinery.
Heres a few examples of my favorites from 1990s lorries:

LOL, here's another special kid.. still my missus does not understand how i can hear that. I must say it does get a lot hardere these days compared to the older Ford 1.3 rattlers & PSA engines with mono valves.

Some sounds stick to your mind. One for me is the MB OM366 engine with huge airpump whine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbGfOA8xDbw

+ the MB V8 previously added spings to mind.
Had a contractor near my house who ran 4 Benz 3535 dumpers with v8's but those were older with a more rattling noise under load while revving up. Edit: OM442 that is.
Old Setra touringcars run the 16litre OM500's as well.

Mind you, in some countries even the newest heavy duty trucks are extremely loud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pokpfj6ZF90

Seems like all strange kids bought Audi 5 cylinders in the end...

Yes and yet another special kid....
Would sit dinner times at school guessing the make before it appeared.

Memorising the side of every cab of every truck of every model so you could guess as you parents were over taking them on the motorway.

And I still do it to some extent today.
When I hear a Land Rover pull up outside the shop I can tell which model and engine it is before I can see it.
                              Audi Nut!!!
