Sounds of old

I knew that link would be a leyland national, I really love that sound. It was a stupid design and they were so loud, often pulled away in a cloud of smoke and the heater only heated the back. I miss them though, they had so much character compared to modern busses.
The sound I am by far the most nostalgic about is that of the SR.N4 Mountbatten class hovercraft. It's pointless watching videos of them on YouTube, it doesn't capture the experience at all, anyone who spent a few minutes watching one approach Dover in a sea of mist, with the sound of the 4 Proteus marine gas turbine engines and the huge propellers growing to a deafening roar as it reverberated from the cliffs will know exactly what I mean. It defiantly makes me a little sad to know I will never experience that again.92 Audi 80 Quattro => RS2 Saloon!

Loving the growlers. Have many a fond memory of seeing/hearing these monsters when visiting my gran as a kid, hauling coal from Ferryhill station. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end watching that tube vid.

Have to disagree, the National was a GOOD design - they were only ment for a 7 year service life, but many were still earning their keep 20+ years later. all the short comings of the mk1 were sorted with the National 2I knew that link would be a leyland national, I really love that sound. Wasn't the mk2 sold with a different engine though? I really liked the sound of the 510, but I was very young when they were in service, it's only more recently that I've read about its problems, but I do get the impression it wasn't well liked. I remember mk1s still being in service in Bristol in the mid 90s.92 Audi 80 Quattro => RS2 Saloon!

Love those trucks, they have a really unique suspension design that seems especially good at off road trials. Never knew the trucks were air cooled though, even the cars were amazing bits of engineering.I grew up between these.v12 aircooled. AWD. now you know why i love Quattro's.

A lot of the National 2's had Gardener engines, the main problem with the mk1 was the heating/demisting - the heater pod was on the roof at the back, heat was blown along the ceiling down the side windows & down the front screen, problem was by the time it got to the front it was cold & the heat never got below head level. Also the driver had no control over the heater from the cabWasn't the mk2 sold with a different engine though? The very early ones never had anti roll bars fitted, so they leaned over rather alarmingly on corners
