    Old Skool vs New School?

Just thought Id try and start of a debate, if there is one lol

Are S and RS Audi's from 2000 onwards as good compared to the cars made from 1980 - 1996? Or can you not compare them due to modern technology?

I was just thinking on peformance and build quality basis?

    Tell me your thoughts

Having owned two S2's and 3 B5's (2xS4, 1xRS4) I think they are quite similar build quality.
    I don't think I'd want anything newer than a B5 though.

Performance wise, I can't really compare as they've all been quite different

    S2 - 290bhp
    S2 - 280bhp
    S4 - 265bhp
    S4 - 500bhp
    RS4 - 420bhp

Tough choice as they are all good in different ways!
I'd have to pick the RS4 though

I'd say the only thing the newer models have over the old school is handling and refinement - two things you will never really be able to compete with, chassis design has moved on so much. Of course they lack the character and excitement of the older 20th century models.

True, but personally I like it a bit more rough and ready!
As nice as modern car ride is, it can get a bit boring and take away some of the fun

Not answering your original question but I have just picked up a new A6 3.0 tdi quattro Biturbo, goes like a rocket, not sure what they have done with the exhaust but it sounds like a V8 manaro...

Build quality is so much better than the BM that went back..

Anything before the mid '80s was not galvanised, so that's a no from me.
You can tell just from parts on an S2 that costs and corners were being cut after '91. So I would say around '88-'91 is the best time, build quality wise. A time when engineers had more say, rather than accountants.

Ive spent two days in a re mapped Audi A3 8p quattro with a lightly tuned 2 litre tfsi, in a word SUPERB and can say that getting into the S2 it didn't feel anywhere near as quick to climb through the rev range. However you cannot re create the feeling and "smell" of getting into a 20 year old car..... I know which I would rather have...

Agree with monkeymagic there ive been after a RS6 for 2 years and I just cant bring myself to sell my S2 been close a few times but for me its the rarity of the cars the character they bring and most of all when they working the smile of content and enjoyment they bring?! Or I could be just being a soppy git!!lol

Consider a B5 RS4 then, they are coming up on 13 years old now, feel very special, look awesome, are very rare, amazing performance and practical.
To me it is my perfect Audi. I would never go back to an S2 now, but would'nt want anything newer than a B5 RS4 either

If you want build quality, performance and value for money I recommend owning a D2 S8. I still really miss mine sometimes.

                            Miss my D2 S8.

Was a wonderful car, mega quick and handled really well for a big girl!

Just watch out for auto box problems!

Ever since I've had my S2, I get in and it has that particular smell I really like, not sure what it is but it smells good .

I feel special when I drive it, that's the most important thing. I've driven newer audi a4s saab 9-3 aero and the likes, nothing compares
