It´s not possible to hear the sound when the speed increase. But it could still be there but transmission/engine/road sound makes it impossible to hear it. The sound gets worse with distance (heat).
The 225/45/17 tire should work as should the OEM Cup rims. The rims have been refurbished last year and are in as new condition. Have not tried the 16" winter rims on the car after the calibers where refurbished but I know that the specific sound was there before. The refurbished calibers did not make that sound disappear. Without really knowing the 16" tire should be less likely to rub against the hub if there are nothing wrong with the hub itself. Cant really tell by looking at it. Its hard to say if there are much difference between right and left hub if any. it´s easy to be fooled when trying to figure out the real issue.
Seems that the problem could be a worn bearing. I find it hard to believe that the hub carrier has been bent. I have not hit anything that hard or fast. How about a warped rear disc could it be a source of the sound/rubbing? Had a big issue with sound coming from the brakes before the calibers where refurbished due to corrosion pushing out the brake pads. I had to brake really hard to get the sound go away. It kept coming back after a while until I brake hard again. That sound could be felt and heard at all speeds. It was silent until the car reached operating temperature. Then hell broke loose. I am glad thats no longer the issue.
