Its been in the workshop so long with the full underside rebuild going on then the repaint - now i just want to drive it , but with no creaking and on full boost LOL
looks like il be in the workshop again very soon :-(
There's a fix for the EGT issues these days. You can either code them out, or some friendly guys from Poland created a replacement that does not break.
That's the least of all the problems. Just wait until you spin a bearing and hear how much the crank costs or blow a turbo and so on.
How does 400 quid for six big end shells sound? And no, not pairs. Just six of the upper shells...
The cylinder heads are prone to cracking, the power steering generally fails around 130k - I've replaced both the rack and the pump and so on.
The suspension is a lot more complex, and don't get me started on the brake discs, which are over a grand to replace all around.
My advice is, buy a RS3 still in warranty on a lease, it's going to be just as quick due to the DSG, has 5 cylinders, and by the time you are done fixing all the stuff on the RS4 it'll cost about the same.
If I had to do it all over again, that's exactly what I would do. I just hate being in debt, but it's better being in debt and drive than pay for a car that spends most of it's time in a workshop and ends up costing you the same in the long run!
Truth be told, the older I get the more I start to appreciate buying a new or a very lightly used car in warranty. Maybe I should get me a KIA with a 7 year warranty? (just kidding).
All that warranty does not help when a DPD courier decides to do a rapid delivery directly into the back of your daily driver at a traffic light though.
There's an element of 'what floats your boat' here... do what you want to do. If you've always wanted an RS6 and the V8 noise, or want a fast motorway barge then go for it! But here's my experience in case it helps, having an RS2 and an RS6.
I'm enthusiastic about the RS6. I enjoy driving it; it sounds awesome. It goes like hell - just press that pedal for relentless torque. It fits 3 kids in the back. It'll cover miles rapidly in comfort, good stereo, integrated sat nav etc. It gets attention and I'm regularly complemented on it. Yet my wife drives it lazily round town in the day with the kids loading the back with shopping, and loves the auto box.
I'm passionate about the RS2. It's a completely different experience than the '6. Much more engaging to drive. Responsive, in comparison to the '6 agile, fun to drive and really puts a grin on my face. It's a complete sleeper - very rare that someone knows what it is. My wife won't drive it - the clutch is heavy and it intimidates her.
The RS6 is a great car and I find myself putting off replacing it - but at some point it'll get sold for a more sensible replacement. The auto box is a big let down too, won't miss that.
I don't think I'll ever sell the RS2. It's a hobby for me, and it's the one that gets me excited to work on & drive. I look forward to the day I get through the 'niggles list' - more time to drive it
On the financials... my RS6 hasn't cost me much yet but it will do soon. It's inevitable, and the damn gearbox is slipping. That's 3.5k right there. It had 10k in necessary parts just before I bought it... If you get lucky it'll just cost you for the 16-18mpg average and nothing more. But you have to expect that it could easily hit you with a 2-3k bill at any time, and there's alot more to go wrong.
Personally - I'd stick with the S2 and enjoy it some before making any rash decision. Get out and test drive an RS6. Have a think about what you want from a car, because it's a totally different drive than your S2. As I've said - they really are different animals.
As you know the reason I sold my last one is I would rather spend my hard earned on something with more of a toy feel about it hence the 911, whilst more of an initial outlay it's cheaper to insure cheaper to tax, better on fuel and thus far,,,,,,,,,, cheaper on parts... Oh... And quicker and to top it all in noggy....
Don't sell your S2 matey you will regret it the moment the buyer gets in and drives off your driveway!! I have been after a RS6 for 2 years and some of the guys have already mentioned the main things that can go wrong with a C5 RS6 ie The gearbox the DRC the Turbos and Intercoolers make sure the timing belt gets done theres the best part of 12k there and yes you can pick them up cheap. I agree with DJones get a 911 Turbo Or save a bit longer and get Nissan GTR Skyline current model fastest car ive ever been in defo a license loser!!! Or if your after something unique go for the stunning Audi 200 Turbo that's for sale on Pistonheads
Lol why would this be a for sale advert ? i can easily post in the classifieds .... Its actually a post for people to tell me to stop being stupid and crack on with the s2
im over the rs6 thoughts even though there is still something i like about them , and for the cost of a good rs4 i could easily make the s2 seriously fun
il see how it goes after hopefully fixing the suspension (again) and checking the boost (just need to make the tool)
